Yes, you can sell your financed car.

You’ll need a settlement letter from your finance company. If the sale price is higher than the settlement figure, you'll get the extra cash (we call it ‘positive equity’). 

However, if the car is worth less than the outstanding amount, you'll need to cover the difference (called negative equity ).

Remember, the process for settling your outstanding finance may vary depending on your finance contract.

You can – if you want to keep your private plate, we suggest putting your reg on retention as soon as you’re considering selling your car. It costs £80 (as of 2025) and you’ll need your V5C
