Is the Jeep Grand Cherokee a good car?
If you’re looking for a large family SUV that’s just as adept at taking the kids to school as it is hauling them halfway up a mountain, the Jeep Grand Cherokee could be the car for you.
That said, the Jeep name might be synonymous with 4x4s, but one of the best go-anywhere family cars of choice is the Land Rover Discovery. Going for the Grand Cherokee requires you to go against the obvious option, then. It’s the Google Chromebook to the popular Apple Macbook.
But while the Chromebook lacks many of the features of its more popular alternative, the Grand Cherokee comes packing something the Discovery doesn’t – a plug-in hybrid engine. That means you get low CO2 emissions for cheap road and company car tax, and the bonus of 97mpg and 31 miles of electric-only range to keep fuel costs low.
That’s a good thing, because the Jeep Grand Cherokee is not cheap. Prices start at around £85,000, making it considerably more expensive than even the plug-in version of the Land Rover Defender. That car’s a touch less family car-friendly than the Discovery, but only just, and it’s fantastic off-road.
Fortunately this price is for the top-spec Summit Reserve model, with more affordable trim levels coming at a later date, though they won’t bring petrol or diesel engines with them, just the PHEV.
With its hybrid engine and fully loaded specification, the Grand Cherokee isn’t cheap – it could be worth waiting for less fancy trims
That doesn’t mean it lacks any of that classic Jeep off-road capability, though. There’s a four-wheel drive with a system that can transfer power to the wheels with the most grip, air suspension that provides massive ground clearance, and drive modes that alter the car’s setup for different terrains.
All well and good, but what’s it like to live with when you’re not channelling your inner Bear Grylls? It certainly looks the part, with a new exterior design that’s equal parts posh and rugged, and an interior that promises to be incredibly spacious and packed full of technology. The boot’s pretty big, but the Discovery’s boot is bigger.
Summit Reserve models get 21-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic sunroof, 19-speaker premium Mcintosh sound system, twin 10.1-inch displays for the infotainment and instruments, and a 10-inch passenger display.
Three trim levels will join Summit Reserve eventually, with a basic, commercial-focused Limited model opening the range. Trailhawk gets a bit more kit and off-road tech, while Overland adds some extra luxuries to make it look and feel more posh.
