Find out more about the Audi A5

Is the Audi A5 a good car?

This is the Audi A5 – and if you’re used to that being a stylish coupe, you might be confused to see that this new model is actually a smart saloon. That’s because Audi is rejigging its lineup, so this is the successor to the Audi A4 in all but name.

It’s a bit like when Marathon changed its name to Snickers. It’s the same concept underneath, you’ll just have to remember not to call it by its old name.

All you really need to know is that the Audi A5 is an executive car that is an alternative to other posh saloons such as the Mercedes C-Class and BMW 3 Series. You could also consider highly specified versions of the Peugeot 508 or excellent Skoda Superb.

Despite the new name the A5’s design hasn’t been given a massive overhaul compared with the A4 it replaces. There’s a bigger grille and chunkier headlights up front, streamlined flush door handles along the side, and a full-width light bar at the rear that’s reminiscent of the Audi Q6 e-tron electric car.

There are familiarities with the Q6 inside, too. There’s a huge, sweeping twin-screen setup for the infotainment and the instrument display, and you can even option a third screen to sit ahead of the passenger. It’s a massive upgrade over the old car.

If the Audi A5’s interior is as good as it is in the Q6 e-tron, it will be a massive leap over the old A4

Boot space has not been confirmed, but it’s likely to be similar to the old model’s 460 litres. However, if you need more space, there is an estate version called A5 Avant that will offer more luggage capacity.

While an electric Audi saloon is expected eventually, for now there’s just a choice of combustion engines. Most people will find the entry-level petrol suits, but you can pay a bit extra for more power and all-wheel drive. If you’re a motorway mile muncher you will be pleased to see there’s a diesel option, too. Want something a bit more sporty? The Audi S5 saloon has more than twice the power of the base version.

With no electric or plug-in hybrid models available at launch, company car buyers will have to wait, or look to alternatives like the BMW 3 Series or Mercedes C-Class.

We will update this review with our impressions once we’ve driven this upmarket saloon. In the meantime you can find out how much you could save with Carwow’s Audi A5 deals. You can also get a great price on the old model by browsing used A4s from our network of trusted dealers, as well as other used Audi models. You can sell your current car through Carwow, too.

The Audi A5 is competitively priced with other executive saloons. Starting prices are a bit higher than the BMW 3 Series and a bit lower than the Mercedes C-Class. It’s quite a bit pricier than the Alfa Romeo Giulia, but while that car is fantastic to drive, its interior felt ancient even before Audi brought out this all-new model.

The Peugeot 508 and Skoda Superb don’t feel quite as high-tech as the A5, but both have smart cabins and are great to drive, and you can get a top-spec model for the price of the Audi.

There are three trims, with the standard Sport model getting that big-screen interior setup, adaptive cruise control and leather upholstery. Mid-spec S line models get a sporty-looking body kit and more figure-hugging seats, while top-spec Edition 1 cars get 20-inch alloy wheels, Matrix LED headlights and a 360-degree parking camera.
