Is the Audi Q6 e-tron Sportback a good car?

The Audi Q6 e-tron Sportback is the slightly sleeker version of the chunky Audi Q6 e-tron electric SUV. It gets a sloping, fastback rear end, and a little less boot space compared to the SUV version. It’s sort of like having one of those trendy one-strap city backpacks instead of a bulky rucksack — you’re carrying less stuff, but you’re looking cooler.

Does it really matter that it’s less practical? You will probably be far more interested in the Q6 e-tron Sportback’s impressive range. Go for the biggest battery option, with the single rear-mounted electric motor, and the Q6 e-tron Sportback boasts a range of up to 402 miles.

It’s not just about range, either. The Q6 e-tron Sportback is also really speedy when it comes to charging. Thanks to a high-tech 800-volt charging system (shared with Porsche — the new Macan Electric is basically the same car under the skin) the Q6 can charge at up to 260kW from a very high-speed DC charging point, which means you can potentially top up from 10-80% battery level in just 21 minutes.

Audi Q6 e-tron Sportback: electric range, battery and charging data

Range: 334-406 miles
Efficiency: 3.3-3.9 miles per kWh
Battery size: 75.8kWh / 94.9kWh
Max charge speed: 225kw / 270kW
Charge time AC: 8hrs, 0-100%, 11kW / 10hrs, 0-100%, 11kW
Charge time DC: 21mins, 10-80%, 225kW / 21mins, 10-80%, 270kW
Charge port location: Left rear
Power outputs: 292hp / 326hp / 388hp

There’s also a smaller battery, which charges a little slower, but it still offers a decent 334-mile range according to official figures.

The Q6 e-tron Sportback is a handsome thing. What look like impossibly slim lights just under the edge of the bonnet are actually the OLED daytime running lights, and the main beam units are tucked discreetly into the bodywork slightly lower down. At the back, there’s a full-width LED light bar (although the Q6 lacks the illuminated Audi four-rings badge that lights up red, as found on the new A6 e-tron electric saloon).

Inside, there’s the same sweep of screen across the top of the dash that you get in the A6 e-tron, which includes an 11.9-inch instrument panel and a 14.5-inch infotainment screen. The big main display is angled slightly towards the driver, but if that makes your passenger feel left out, you can optionally have an extra touchscreen for them too.

With a long range, stylish looks and high-tech cabin, the fact it's reasonably priced among other posh electric SUVs is mighty impressive

With the fastback rear, the Q6 e-tron Sportback is ever so slightly less practical than the equivalent Q6 e-tron SUV model — there’s 511 litres of luggage space, compared to 526 litres in the SUV version, which shouldn’t be a big deal for most. The only real downside is that when you have the back seats folded down, there’s less rear roof height, so bulkier items just won’t fit. Maybe rent a van if you’re popping to Ikea.

There is a very sporty SQ6 Sportback version, which gets 490hp (and which costs almost £100,000!) but we’ll deal with that separately. As far as the standard Q6 e-tron Sportback is concerned, you can choose from a basic 292hp version, with the smaller 75.8kWh battery, rear-wheel drive, and a range of up to 334 miles. Then there’s the mid-spec Sport Performance version, which gets a 326hp electric motor, again with rear-wheel drive, but with a bigger 94.9kWh battery giving it a range of up to 406 miles. Finally, there’s the Sport Quattro model, which gets an extra electric motor in the front for all-wheel drive and 388hp, with a range of up to 392 miles.

Compared to the current BMW iX3, the Audi Q6 e-tron Sportback is not only more affordable, it’s also sleeker and goes further on one charge (although it’s worth remembering that an all-new BMW iX3 launches later this year, with a potential 372-mile range).

The Q6 e-tron Sportback sits between the Mercedes EQB and EQE SUV in the Stuttgart marque’s lineup — it’s much more expensive than the EQB, but also sleeker, sportier, and with a longer range. Compared to the EQE SUV, the Q6 loses out in terms of cabin space but it has a fractionally longer range and is much better value.

Standard equipment for the Q6 e-tron Sportback includes 19-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights with high-beam assist, sports seats, adaptive cruise control, and keyless entry.

Audi Q6 e-tron Sportback FAQs

Unlike some other Audi electric cars, the Q6 uses a single charging socket, located on the left rear of the car, which accepts both the Type 2 AC charging cable and the double-decker CCS DC fast charging connector.

In the case of the Q6 e-tron, you probably won’t need to charge every night. Even the smaller-battery model can manage up to 334 miles on one charge, so that will do most people for a few days at least without charging. The longer-range, bigger battery model has a quoted range of up to 402 miles, which would do most people for a week.

It depends which model you’re buying. The basic version, with the 292hp motor and the 75.8kWh battery has a claimed range of up to 334 miles, and should be able to do 250-280 miles in real-world conditions. The bigger, 94.9kWh battery model, with the 326hp motor, can go for a claimed 402 miles on one charge, and should do at least 300-350 miles in real-world conditions.
