Find out more about the Audi S5 Sportback (2020 - 2024)

Is the Audi S5 Sportback a good car?

The Audi S5 Sportback is the five-door version of the S5 Coupe, and adds some dynamic styling to the reserved A5 Sportback, while being a step below the sporty RS5 Sportback.

It’s like biting into cayenne pepper instead of a scotch bonnet – not the punchiest but still plenty of kick to keep you entertained.

Compared to the A5, the S5 Sportback does look more aggressive with a tweaked front-end look including different standard headlights and ‘S’ badges. Down the side, there’s sportier alloy wheel designs and more S badges, while at the back you get a bootlip spoiler and two sets of dual exhausts at either side of the bumper.

You’ll find the cabin is also sportier, with quilted leather sports seats as standard, as well as a flat-bottomed leather steering wheel and metal pedals. But the rest of the cabin is quite dark, with piano black inlays and only a little bit of silver trim around the edges.

As standard, you get two decent displays, with the central 8.3-inch infotainment touchscreen in the middle and a 12.3-inch configurable driver’s display, as well as automatic climate control and a Bang & Olufsen sound system.

If the standard A5 Sportback is anything to go by, you’ll find the interior space to be more than accommodating for four adults, but adding a fifth in the middle seat will make life much more cramped with the coupe roofline cutting into the outer two passengers’ room.

Taking the practical A5 Sportback and adding a punchy V6, the S5 Sportback is a more liveable and civilised version of the RS5 Sportback

Boot space is also unchanged at 430 litres when compared to the quattro four-wheel drive version of the A5 Sportback – although the front-wheel drive versions get an extra 35 litres.

The sportiest version of the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe, the M440i xDrive, gets a 470-litre boot, so the Audi does lag behind there.

Under the bonnet of the S5 Sportback is a 3.0-litre V6 diesel paired with mild hybrid technology and an eight-speed automatic transmission sending the power to the quattro all-wheel drive system with a limited slip differential. This is the first time the S5 has had a diesel and it will likely be the last before an all-electric version joins the Audi line-up.

The V6 develops a punchy 347hp and 700Nm of torque, helping get you from 0-60mph in 4.9 seconds and taking you on to 155mph. That’s a fairly decent amount of punch from a practical coupe.

With adaptive suspension with chassis control available as an optional extra, you’ll be able to set the S5 Sportback up as you like it. The standard-fit sport suspension will give you a harsher overall experience, but will help the S5 feel more dynamic than a normal A5 Sportback.
