Is the Audi S6 Sportback e-tron a good car?

The old Audi S6 was really getting on in years, but now it’s the showcase for Audi’s latest and greatest electric car tech. The new S6 Sportback e-tron is a sleek, high-tech electric fastback which, on paper, looks like it’ll be a really good alternative if you’re thinking of buying a BMW i5 or Mercedes EQE.

The regeneration from the pretty elderly A6 is like when a broken-down housing block is converted into a stunning new residential unit with roof terrace, indoor gym and floor-to-ceiling glass everywhere. There’s no doubting that the new model is definitely moving with the times.

The S6 Sportback e-tron features a few styling upgrades from the standard A6 e-tron. You get 21-inch alloy wheels with red brake calipers, and a black styling package including a blacked-out Audi badge. You also get an upgrade to the top-end lighting package, which features matrix LED headlights and configurable daytime running lights which can display several different patterns. There’s even a lightbar at the rear which can show an array of symbols to communicate warnings to surrounding road users.

Inside, the cabin’s seriously high-tech. It’s dominated by a total of three screens - an 11.9-inch one for driver information, a huge 14.5-inch central infotainment display, and a third 10.9-inch screen which the front passenger can use to control various functions or watch videos. It’s even got a privacy filter so the driver can’t be distracted.

All S6 Sportback e-trons come in high-specification Edition 1 trim, too, so they’re loaded with additional kit - all models get a panoramic sunroof and a posh Bang & Olufsen sound system.

The S6 Sportback e-tron combines good performance with a practical body and a really impressive range on a full charge - could this be the posh electric car to go for?

Despite its dramatically sloping roofline, the S6 Sportback e-tron looks like it’ll be impressively practical. It has a hatchback boot, for starters, which is much more useful for carrying large items than the saloon opening you get on the BMW i5 or Mercedes EQE. With 502 litres of space it’s big, too, and in fact has the same on-paper capacity as the S6 Avant e-tron estate.

The ‘S’ in S6 indicates high performance, so Audi’s fitted the Sportback e-tron with a pair of electric motors - one on each axle, giving quattro four-wheel drive. There’s a total of 550hp, giving a 0-62mph sprint time of just 3.9s - that’s just 0.1s slower than the i5 M60.

Top speed is limited to 149mph, giving the S6 Sportback e-tron plenty of autobahn prowess.

Despite that high performance, you can still go a good distance in the S6 Sportback e-tron. It’s one of the most aerodynamic cars on sale today, which helps it slip through the air efficiently.

That, combined with a huge 100kWh battery pack, means an official range figure of more than 400 miles - 405 to be precise, eclipsing the i5 M60 by a whopping 90 miles. We’ll look forward to seeing how the two cars compare in the real world.

How much is the Audi S6 Sportback e-tron?

The Audi S6 Sportback e-tron has a RRP range of £97,500 to £97,500. Monthly payments start at £1,202.

Coming in at a bit less than £98,000, there’s less than £250 difference between the S6 Sportback e-tron and the BMW i5 M60 saloon in terms of cash price. A Mercedes-AMG EQE 53 is a bit more expensive, but it’s slightly more powerful too.
