About BMW

BMW started out way back in 1916. It hasn’t always been a car maker, it began by making aircraft engines. BMW built its first motorbike in 1923, with the first car following in 1928.

Today, BMW is one of Germany’s biggest car makers, with factories across the world. It’s one of Germany’s ‘big three’ prestige brands, along with Audi and Mercedes-Benz. BMW’s models are usually sporty and rewarding to drive, with styling that’s often controversial but rarely dull.

Many of BMW’s current range are hybrids or fully electric vehicles. Full EVs have an ‘i’ prefix to their model name (i5, iX3, etc).

BMW FAQs

It stands for Bayerische Motoren Werke, or Bavarian Motor Works. The name had been around for several years before BMW made its first car in 1928.
BMW is a publicly listed company, owned by its shareholders. The Quandt family of German industrialists has a large stake in BMW.
Cars are still made in BMW’s home city of Munich. However, there are BMW factories on four continents. As well as plants elsewhere in Germany, BMW also manufactures in Spartanburg in the USA, San Luis Potosi in Mexico, and Shenyang in China.
Study reliability reports and owner satisfaction surveys closely, and you build a mixed picture of BMW reliability. For the most part the cars are dependable, but not necessarily as trouble-free as the best models from Lexus and Toyota. Some BMW models and engine variants are more reliable than others. 
BMW is a prestige brand, so premium pricing comes with the territory. What’s more, building cars in Germany is more expensive than manufacturing in an economy with lower labour costs.
