This is my favourite luxury SUV, and you can save £20,000 on one by buying one second hand

Car changing is a big deal
It’s fantastic to drive, lovely to sit in and hugely practical, making it one of the best all-round premium SUVs you can buy.
I love the latest BMW X5, so much so that it’s one of the few cars on Carwow with a 10/10 rating. It was also crowned Adventurers Choice in the 2025 Carwow Car Of The Year Awards.
I’ll get into what makes this car so good in a bit. I’m first going to talk about one of the negatives: the cost. The BMW X5 is quite expensive to buy new, with a starting price of around £73,500. Through Carwow you can save an average of over £8,000, and there’s another way you can get behind the wheel of this brilliant car for a lot less.

A quick look at used BMW X5s on Carwow revealed a couple of examples for less than £60,000. One which stood out to me was a 2023 M Sport model with the 3.0-litre diesel engine and 21,500 miles on the clock.
It’s also finished in a metallic blue and has a lovely white leather interior. If you spec a new X5 to this level it’ll cost you over £80,000, so you save £20,000 just by buying one which is a couple of years old.

But why should you buy a BMW X5? Well for starters it’s brilliant to drive. An SUV this big has no business being this fun to chuck down a country road, but it’s also still a really comfortable cruiser on the motorway.
Then there’s the interior. It’s beautifully made with high-quality materials, making it feel more premium than something like a Volkswagen Touareg or Mercedes GLE. You also get loads of rear seat space and a big boot, making it a great family car.

Now, no car is truly perfect, although the X5 comes pretty close. If you go for the larger alloy wheels it can feel a bit firm over bumps, so try to find one on smaller rims. I think it’s a bit mean that lumbar support is an optional extra on a car this expensive as well, so make sure you check that your car has it fitted.
These are minor gripes though in what is a very good SUV. So good that in a group test between the X5, Volkswagen Touareg, Audi Q7, Porsche Cayenne and the Mercedes GLE, the BMW came out on top.
