Why lease a convertible car

Convertible cars are synonymous with style and freedom, making them an attractive option for many drivers. Whether you’re looking for a sporty two-seater or a more spacious model, leasing offers a variety of choices to suit your lifestyle and preferences.

The allure of convertibles lies in their ability to deliver an unmatched driving experience. With the top down, you can enjoy open-air drives, soaking in the sunshine and fresh air - something no other car body style can offer

However, the premium design and engineering of a convertible often come with a higher price tag. Leasing provides a cost-effective way to enjoy the luxury of a convertible without the long-term financial commitment of ownership. It also allows you to compare monthly payments with other car types, helping you find a model that matches your budget and driving desires.

Convertible lease FAQs

A convertible car lease is a hassle-free way to have a brand new soft top to drive without having to invest in buying it. Instead of using savings or arranging finance to buy a new or used one, for a convertible lease, you just have to commit to pay an amount each month for the duration of the contract. At the end of the lease, you can simply change it for a new one.

Some leasing companies will also include maintenance in the monthly price. That means you have the peace of mind of not having to worry about unexpected bills.

A convertible car can range from a small, two-seater sports car like a Mazda MX-5, BMW Z4 or Porsche 718 Boxster to a compact Fiat 500C, or an SUV-style Volkswagen T-Roc Cabriolet. Which would be the best convertible to lease for you? That probably depends on your budget and needs.

There are at least a dozen different cars to consider ranging from the smallest and most affordable, like the Fiat 500C, to cars that some only ever dream of driving, like the Ford Mustang Convertible or BMW 8 Series Convertible.

All you need to lease a convertible car is to make the financial commitment to pay the monthly payments for the duration of the agreement - plus a driving licence and a sense of fun. You may be asked to pay a few months' payments in advance as a kind of deposit. You also need to be sure you can commit to the lease contract as it’s not really possible to cancel it (although sometimes they can be transferred to someone else).

We have a guide on ending a car lease early where you can find more information.

At the end of your convertible car lease, you just give it back and start a new convertible lease, if you wish. If you think you may want to buy it at the end of the contract, ask if that is an option before you start the contract as it’s not always possible.

If your lease contract was for a specific annual mileage and you’ve gone over that, you will have to pay an excess mileage charge for every mile. The car will be inspected when it’s returned, so must be in good condition or the lease company can charge you for any repairs.

For more information, take a look at our handy guide on what happens at the end of a car lease.

Lease payments are calculated on the predicted value of the car at the end of the contract. If your convertible has a higher mileage than the maximum agreed in the lease contract, it means the car will be worth a lower amount, and may result in more wear and tear, so the lease company will charge an excess mileage fee for every mile to make up the difference. Excess mileage fees may not seem much, usually a few pence per mile, but if you are several thousands of miles over your limit, it could add up to more than you expect.
