Is the Citroen Berlingo Multispace (2008-2018) a good car?

The Berlingo is an alternative to equally practical van-based MPVs such as the Ford Torneo Connect, Peugeot Partner Tepee and Fiat Doblo.

The old Berlingo was based on a van so was slightly crude but hugely useful. The new model was designed from the beginning as both a van and an MPV so it feels much more car-like to drive, even if it isn’t nearly as good as some of the dedicated MPVs like the Ford S-Max.

The unique selling point of the Berlingo is the storage and versatility that it offers – if you buy one it’ll take you weeks to figure out where all the storage bins and cubby holes are, and the high roof gives a feeling of spaciousness that few can rival.

The Citroen Berlingo Multispace may not be traditionally handsome but it's actually an incredibly practical workhorse that will serve you well

MPVs inevitably end up carrying some very precious cargo in the form of family and friends, so this is the sort of vehicle where safety will be a serious consideration. Unfortunately, the Berlingo only scored three-stars in its 2014 Euro NCAP testing.

All Berlingo models come with air-conditioning as standard but everything else on basic cars isn’t worth boasting – ABS, Stability control and a Bluetooth connection for your phone.

How practical is it?

Yes, it’s a van with windows, but that means the Citroen Berlingo has simply acres of space inside. It’s just a shame that the rear seats don’t sit flat on the floor when you fold them down

Among the ingenious storage solutions is a way to carry skis inside the car - proof that this car isn't just big; it's clever, too

As soon as you step through the door and have a look around the cavernous interior you’ll know that the Berlingo Multispace was designed with a huge focus on space for up to six passengers. There really is no shortage of space in any direction and the optional seven-seater version will be particularly appealing if you have a big family with big space needs.

There are many storage solutions available for the Berlingo including an interior roof rack and 50-litre locker, footwell compartments, drinks holders, and boot box. So innovative are the storage solutions that you can even carry skis – inside the car!

With five seats in place, the Berlingo’s boot holds 675 litres and the actual load area is closer to a box than in any other car. Putting things in and taking them out is made easier by the low load lip.

You can drop the rear seats for extra space but they don’t fold flat to the floor. For a truly huge load area, you can remove completely the rear seats one by one and end up with a box that has a 3,000-litre volume.

What's it like to drive?

The Berlingo may look alarmingly like a van, but thankfully it doesn’t drive like one.

There's a good choice of engines for the Berlingo, but go for diesel if you load-up your vehicle regularly

The single petrol engine on offer here is fine for keeping up with the traffic, but only if you don’t have anything like a full load in the vehicle. If you regularly carry a lot of weight in your Berlingo, you’ll want to leave the VT95 petrol engine alone and go for one of the diesels.

The three diesel engines are reasonably refined and are powerful enough to keep up with the traffic without having to mercilessly thrash the Citroen. The most powerful 115 HDi will (obviously) give the best performance and is pretty economical too. However, the 75 HDi and 95 HDi also do a fine job and won’t leave you regretting buying either of them.

The driving experience is good with little wind noise and decent handling, but its trump card on the road is how graceful it goes over poor road surfaces. The Berlingo isn’t quite as good as Citroens of old but it’s not far off. The tall stance, upright driving position and acres of glass allow huge amounts of visibility delivering a commanding view of the road.

It resists roll reasonably well and grips hard no matter how loaded the car is, but it is always going to be a big ask to eliminate body roll with a vehicle this tall unless you spend an awful lot of money.

What's it like inside?

The van origins of the Berlingo are hard to hide but the interior does a good job of providing you with a spacious and easy-to-use environment
