Citroen hybrid range: current models

Citroen offers hybrid cars in its C5 Aircross and C5 X models.

Citroen C5 Aircross

The Citroen C5 Aircross is a mid-size SUV renowned for its comfort. The plug-in hybrid has an official range of 34 miles in pure electric mode and a combined output of 225hp with 360Nm of torque. The C5 Aircross mild hybrid does not require plugging-in as it recharges while the car is driving. Its 21kW battery will power the car for short distances only and is primarily there to help the engine so it uses less fuel.

Citroen C5 X

The Citroen C5 X is a plug-in hybrid that can officially travel up to 39 miles in pure electric mode thanks to its 81.2kW electric motor. It has a Citroen PureTech 180hp Stop & Start petrol engine for a combined power of 225hp and a combined torque of 360Nm.

Citroen hybrid cars FAQs

A Citroen plug-in hybrid car has four driving modes: electric, hybrid, comfort and sport. In electric mode it will power the car using only the battery for quiet and zero tailpipe emissions driving. In other modes the battery helps to provide instant power and torque so the petrol engine uses less fuel. It is charged by being plugged into a domestic or public charger, but can also recover some charge during braking and deceleration.

The mild hybrid offered with the C5 Aircross is not a plug-in. Instead, it has a smaller battery to supplement the car’s engine, with enough power for short distances when manoeuvring, for example. It recharges the battery while the car is driving.

The Citroen C5 X starts from £39,300.

The Citroen C5 Aircross starts from £30,740 for the mild hybrid and £34,995 for the plug-in hybrid, both in the Max trim level.

The best Citroen hybrid car to buy will depend on what size and type of car you want. As there’s currently only two Citroen models available as hybrids, it’s a relatively small choice between the new C5 Aircross SUV and the larger, lower, sleeker C5 X crossover estate. If you don’t want to have to plug-in your hybrid car every night, then the Citroen C5 Aircross mild hybrid is the best car to buy.
