What is the Birmingham clean air zone?

The Birmingham clean air zone is an area in the city centre that is trying to improve air quality by discouraging vehicles with exhaust emissions above a certain standard from driving in it. These vehicles are charged a daily fee if they are driven in the Birmingham clean air zone.

If your vehicle complies with the following exhaust emissions criteria, it should be exempt from paying the daily fee to drive into the clean air zone in Birmingham:

The Birmingham clean air zone zone includes an area of the city centre inside the A4540 Middleway - but does not include the Middleway itself.

No, Birmingham airport is not in the clean air zone - and neither is the National Exhibition Centre (N.E.C.).

It is enforced using ANPR number plate recognition cameras that automatically check each vehicle and will send a penalty charge notice to the registered owner of the vehicle.

Non-compliant cars, taxis and vans currently pay £8 per day to drive into the Birmingham clean air zone. Coaches, buses and HGVs that don’t meet the emissions criteria pay £50 each day.

Some vehicles are exempt from paying the clean air zone charge. This includes petrol and diesel cars that meet the emission standards.

You may not have to pay the daily charge to drive in Birmingham’s clean air zone if you’re visiting a specified hospital or medical centre within the CAZ, but you’ll need to claim a one-time voucher to pay the daily fee.

Payments for the clean air zone can be made by calling 0300 029 8888 on Monday to Friday, 8am to 7pm, or Saturday, 8am to 2pm, or online via the Government website.

You must pay the Birmingham clean air zone charge either six days in advance, on the day or within six days after your visit.

Motorcycles and mopeds do not have to pay the clean air zone daily charge in Birmingham.

The Birmingham clean air zone daily charge applies to all vehicles that do not meet the emission standards or do not have a valid exemption, such as historic and recovery vehicles.

These are the criteria to comply with to not have to pay the Birmingham clean air zone daily charge:

  • Diesel vehicles: Euro 6 (or better)
  • Petrol vehicles: Euro 4 (or better)
  • Gas vehicles: Euro 6 (or better)
  • Hybrid vehicles: the engine must comply with the petrol or diesel standards
  • Full electric or zero emissions vehicles
