Car changing is a big deal
This is the new Cupra Terramar, a sporty alternative to something like a Volkswagen Tiguan which is coming this year. Read on for all you need to know.
- New Cupra Terramar spotted testing
- More sporty-looking than a Tiguan
- Will share parts with that car
- Over to 62 miles of range from the plug-in hybrid
- On sale later this year
The new Cupra Terramar has been confirmed for launch this year. This alternative to the Volkswagen Tiguan and Kia Sportage will be available with both mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid engines, the latter of which will do 62 miles on electric power alone.
New Cupra Terramar design
The Cupra Terramar is tantalisingly close to a reveal, and a camouflaged prototype has been spotted out and about during development testing wearing a pretty thin disguise.
You can see the angular headlights poking out of the wrap, and they have a similar shape to the ones found on the Cupra Born and the Forthcoming Cupra Tavascan. The Terramar also appears to buck the trend of massive, gaping grilles with a more subtle-looking system of air intakes.
Looking from the side, it has a more sporty sloping roofline than the Volkswagen Tiguan, a car which will donate a lot of parts to the Terramar. The wheels fitted to this test car look like they’ve come from an Audi, so they’re unlikely to be the ones you’ll get on the final product. The rear is pretty well-covered for now, however a full-width light bar is likely hiding beneath the camouflage.
New Cupra Terramar engines
While the specific engine options haven’t been announced yet, Cupra has confirmed that the new Terramar will be offered with both mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains. These will almost certainly be shared with the new Volkswagen Tiguan.
The entry-level version will therefore most likely have a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with 150hp. This is enough to launch the Tiguan from 0-60mph in 9.1 seconds, so similar figures can be expected from the Terramar. For a bit of added oomph, you could also see the 204hp engine from the new Skoda Kodiaq.
The plug-in hybrid system will also come from the Tiguan, and the same setup is also used in the Kodiaq. Cupra has already confirmed a 62-mile all-electric range for the Terramar, which is exactly the same as the Kodiaq and Tiguan can manage.
When can I buy a new Cupra Terramar?
The new Cupra Terramar will be revealed in full later this year, with sales expected to start before the end of 2024. Pricing hasn’t been nailed down quite yet, however it’s likely to cost around the same as a Volkswagen Tiguan. A price tag of £35,000 and up is a safe bet.
