Cupra SUVs put the ‘sports’ in sports utility vehicle.

Cupra Formentor

Most of the Cupra range has a direct SEAT equivalent. Not so the Formentor, which is a standalone Cupra model. To look at, it’s part SUV and part coupé. To drive, it’s like a hot hatch on stilts. You can buy roomier SUVs with bigger boots, but there aren’t many that are as good to drive as the Formentor.

Cupra Ateca

Choose the Ateca if you want a family-friendly SUV with a sporty personality. While it doesn’t look as distinctive as the Cupra Formentor, the Ateca makes a more practical choice. It’s a shame the inside of the Ateca doesn’t have a bit more pizzazz to it, and the ride is rather firm. Otherwise, this is a potent yet practical car.

 

Cupra SUVs FAQs

You’ll generally pay a bit more for a Cupra than the equivalent SEAT. So, at the time of writing a Cupra Ateca costs upwards of £36,700. The Formentor range starts from £35,475.
Cupra started out as a spec level rather than a brand. If you saw Cupra badging on a SEAT, you knew you were looking at a high-performance model. Although Cupra is now a car maker in its own right, it’s still closely related to SEAT. Cupra cars are made in a SEAT factory in Spain.
Cupra doesn’t perform brilliantly in reliability surveys. That doesn’t mean that a Cupra will leave you stranded at the side of the road, but a Cupra SUV is more likely to need attention between services than an SUV from the likes of Lexus or Toyota. The good news is that Cupra comes with a longer than normal warranty as standard, lasting five years of 90,000 miles, whichever comes first.
