Is a used Dacia Duster a good car?
If you’re looking for super-affordable, back-to-basics motoring, the Dacia Duster might just be the car for you. This is a small SUV that has no frills or gimmicks, instead it just offers a decent amount of interior space and a smattering of off-road ability for not much money.
Being so cheap when new means that you can get a much newer Duster for your budget than pretty much any other family SUV you might be considering. Depending on how much you have to spend, you might even get one that’s still within its three-year manufacturer warranty.
In recent years you can get air-con, a DAB radio and cruise control, but it’s hardly laden with equipment. Unless you’re really committed to the utilitarian look, we’d go for mid-spec Expression models, as they get a few more creature comforts.
Something like a Nissan Juke might look more stylish inside and out, but it will be more cramped inside. You can fit three adults in the back seats of a Duster with little complaint.
The lack of safety kit is a potential downside, particularly if you’re planning on buying the Duster as a family car. It scored just three-out-of-five stars in Euro NCAP safety testing.
What to look for when buying a second hand Dacia Duster
Just because the Dacia Duster is cheap doesn’t mean you have to put up with loads of problems. In fact, because it uses tried and tested Renault and Nissan parts, the Duster actually has a really good reputation for reliability.
That said, pre-2014 cars are known to be fairly susceptible to rusting, so make sure you give the bodywork a good look over for any signs of deterioration, particularly around the door sills, boot hinges and under the bonnet.
Because of its SUV shape, and the fact that some models have four-wheel drive, some owners overestimate the Duster’s off-roading prowess. Be sure to have a look under the car and see if you can spot any damage.
If buying a diesel model, some engines lose performance between about 1,500rpm and 2,500rpm. If you notice this it’s probably worth walking away, as fixes are hit and miss.
