Find out more about the Ford Tourneo Courier

Is the Ford Tourneo Courier a good car?

Under its chunky skin, the Ford Tourneo Courier is basically a Ford Puma, sharing its chassis and engines with the sharp-driving small SUV. It’s as if that short guy you knew in school went and bulked up at the gym, and then bought a job-lot of Snickers workwear. And then came around and fixed your plumbing.

You’d never guess from the outside that the two cars shared as much as a bolt — the Puma is all lean and sharply styled, while the Tourneo Courier just looks like a garden shed with wheels, especially in the optional green metallic paint. Pretty, it ain’t.

That’s forgiven once you see the inside. True, you can quickly tell it’s a van thanks to the cheap plastics and upright driving position, but it’s also hugely practical. There’s a massive shelf up above the windscreen, a spacious glovebox, big door bins, and lots of other storage spaces dotted about the front of the cabin. You’ll never lack for a place to throw a wallet or a set of keys.

There’s an 8.0-inch touchscreen set into the dash, nice and high up where you can get at it, and it gets Ford’s latest infotainment software, which is pretty good to use. It’s just a shame that Ford bunged the climate control buttons onto the screen — physical knobs would be simpler, and more in-keeping with the Courier’s basic-but-useful character.

If you're after maximum practicality from your family car, van-based MPVs like the Ford Tourneo Courier are a great option – if not the most stylish choice

There’s lots of space — and lots of light, thanks to massive, square windows — in the back seats too, and the twin sliding side doors make loading up kids and their car seats an absolute doddle. The rear windows also slide down, which isn’t necessarily a given when it comes to van-based MPVs. There’s no seven-seat option for the Tourneo Courier, which might mean it’s out of the question for growing families.

With 570 litres of space, expanding to more than 2,000 litres with the rear seats tucked away, the Tourneo Courier is usefully practical, and its van origins mean that the loading height is almost down by your ankles, so it’s really easy to get heavy items in and out. Again, though, the likes of the Citroen Berlingo or the Volkswagen Caddy Life offer much more in terms of boot space.

The Tourneo Courier, so far, only comes with one engine option — Ford’s familiar 1.0-litre EcoBoost three-cylinder turbo engine, with 125hp and the choice of a six-speed manual or a seven-speed automatic gearbox.

Performance is actually quite lively, even if the on-paper 0-62mph figure isn’t all that impressive, and fuel economy ought not to be a major issue — expect around 40mpg. There’s no diesel option though, which might put off regular long-haul drivers. Ford does plan a fully electric version, too.

We'll update this page with a comprehensive review once we've been able to thoroughly test the Ford Tourneo Courier, but in the meantime be sure to check out our latest new Ford deals and used Fords for sale from our trusted dealer partners - and if you need to sell your current car, then Carwow can help you with that, too.

The Tourneo Courier is actually quite awkwardly priced. It’s more affordable than the new Transit Tourneo Connect, but then it’s also quite a bit smaller and less useful. The Tourneo Courier is cheaper than the Volkswagen Caddy MPV (which shares its structure with the Tourneo Connect, oddly), but only by a small amount considering how much bigger inside the Caddy is. Equally, the Ford is quite a bit more expensive than the Citroen Berlingo, which again is a larger and more practical vehicle.

Ford Tourneo Courier FAQs

Although the two van-based MPVs share a Ford badge and the Tourneo name (which is Ford-speak for a van with windows and seats) the two cars are very different. The Tourneo Courier is Ford’s smallest van-based MPV offering, and is based on the same chassis and engines as the Ford Puma, with the two vehicles being built side-by-side in Ford’s factory in Romania. The Tourneo Connect is physically bigger, quite a bit more expensive, and shares a platform and engines with the Volkswagen Caddy, thanks to a van-sharing agreement between the two companies.

The 1.0-litre EcoBoost three-cylinder petrol turbo engine used by the Tourneo Courier should be pretty economical. Ford claims 42mpg when fitted with a six-speed manual gearbox, and 40mpg should be possible in daily driving.
