What is an Overfinch Range Rover?
December 15, 2022 by carwow staff
When it comes to posh, super-luxurious off-roaders, it’s hard to think of a more iconic model than the Range Rover. Right out of the box, these imperious 4x4s ooze class and sophistication, and are capable of ferrying you from Knightsbridge to the most far-flung corners of your sprawling family estate in utmost comfort.
The thing is, though, is that they’re so good at what they do that they’re kind of, well, everywhere. What do you do if you’re sold on a Range Rover, but want something that’s going to stand out from the crowd?
That’s where aftermarket companies that specialise in customising Range Rovers come in. There are a fair few out there, such as Urban Automotive and Kahn Automotive, but the one we’re looking at here is called Overfinch. So, what is an Overfinch Range Rover? Read on to find out…
Overfinch Range Rover explained
While the standard Range Rover is already an exceptionally classy vehicle in its own right, in a world of Rolls-Royce Cullinans and Bentley Bentaygas, there are some out there who might think the original posh off-roader no longer cuts the mustard. This is where Overfinch, an independent British tuner that specialises in spicing up Land Rover models, comes in.
An Overfinch Range Rover is simply a Range Rover (usually a high-spec V8-powered version, but not always) that’s been modified by a third-party company called Overfinch. It’s not really a standalone model in its own right, but Overfinch provides Range Rover owners with the opportunity to treat their car as a canvas upon which their own personal mark can be left through a series of visual modifications and upgrades.
Does Overfinch only work on Range Rovers?
Although Overfinch got its start back in 1975 by modifying and improving the original Range Rover, over the years the company has branched out to work on practically every Land Rover model.
Look around online and you can find Discoveries, Range Rover Sports, Velars and Evoques, and Defenders old and new that have been enhanced by Overfinch. The end result might not be to everyone’s tastes, but chances are that if you have a current Land Rover product, Overfinch will be able to work it into something special for you.
What modifications does Overfinch do to Range Rovers?
In the early days, Overfinch (which was then known by the name Schuler) made its name by making fairly significant mechanical modifications to the Range Rovers of the time. This included tweaks to the standard engine to extract more power and greater efficiency, as well as the fitment of custom automatic gearboxes, steering and suspension upgrades. The company would also completely swap out the stock Rover V8 for a larger 5.7-litre V8 engine from Chevrolet. Of course, though many of the tweaks that were made back then were mechanical, Overfinch still did plenty of work to improve the Range Rover’s luxury look and feel.
Today, it’s these visual modifications that the company remains mostly focussed on. Custom-made exterior body kits are fashioned from carbon-fibre to give the Range Rover a far more aggressive and sporty look, while enormous alloy wheels of Overfinch’s own unique design can also be fitted. Bespoke exterior paintwork is also available, with customers able to work with Overfinch’s technicians to brew up their own personal dream colour.
On the inside, the seats and other surfaces are retrimmed in new leather from extremely posh cows, and you even have the option of commissioning a special veneer design for the wooden cabin trim sections. You don’t often see this sort of thing outside of a Rolls-Royce.
Overfinch can even kit your Rangie out so it has everything you need for a Champagne breakfast (assuming you’re a passenger), or hold all the guns and gubbins needed for a shooting weekend.
As far as mechanical changes are concerned, modern Overfinch Range Rovers tend to still run with the set-up they had straight out of the factory. However, Overfinch has created a number of low-volume special edition models over the years that have received a performance boost. One such example is the Overfinch SuperSport. Based on the Range Rover Sport SVR, this high-performance SUV received a bespoke exhaust system, an uprated air-induction system to boost engine power, and special Brembo brakes for added stopping power.
Should I consider buying an Overfinch Range Rover?
If you’re the kind of person that really, really likes putting their own personal mark on their vehicle, then absolutely you should consider buying an Overfinch Range Rover. While the standard car is already an impressively refined, comfortable and luxurious SUV, the ability to really put your stamp on the car with a choice of paint options, bodykits, wheels and interior finishes really helps the Overfinch Range Rover to feel as special as the likes of the Rolls-Royce Cullinan and Bentley Bentayga.
There are, however, one or two drawbacks associated with going for an Overfinch Range Rover. The main one is cost – all of these modifications certainly don’t come cheap. While a Range Rover might start out being significantly less expensive than the Rolls or the Bentley, a heavy Overfinch customisation job will narrow that gap significantly. The other drawback that’s worth mentioning is largely to do with practicality. If you’re the kind of person who uses their Range Rover off-road regularly, will you really want to risk scuffing the custom bodywork, paintwork and wheels by venturing off the beaten track? You could find yourself in for a pricey repair bill if so.
