This electric SUV is one of the best you can buy – here’s how you can get it half price

Car changing is a big deal
I loved it when I first got behind the wheel back in 2021, and it’s still a fantastic choice for families in 2025. There are some fantastic used deals to be had as well.
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is one of my favourite electric cars because it just does everything so well. It’s really spacious inside, the interior is nicely made, you get loads of standard equipment and it’s super comfortable to drive. It just ticks all the boxes.
At just under £40,000 new it’s not even that expensive, and you can save an average of £5,000 through Carwow at the time of writing. If you want to save even more money though, you should really consider looking at used Hyundai Ioniq 5s.

I’ve found plenty of 2021 examples with low miles from less than £20,000 through Carwow, and that’s a proper bargain. It’s less than the dinky Citroen e-C3, and it’s only a few thousand pounds more than a Dacia Spring.
Your £20,000 can get you a Premium model with the larger of the two available batteries, meaning you’ll get around 300 miles of range. You also get two 12.3-inch screens, blind spot monitoring, a reversing camera and adaptive cruise control.

The first thing that strikes you about this car is the way it looks. I thought it was a really cool design when it launched, and it still stands up today. The sleek front light bar and pixel-style lamps make it look like something out of an 8-bit video game from the 1980s, giving it a retro-futuristic vibe.

The interior is a lovely place to spend time as well. The open layout with no centre tunnel makes it feel really open and airy, and there’s loads of storage space as well. Out on the road this is a comfy car as well, it does a great job of ironing out the bumps.

The Ioniq 5 isn’t perfect though. A Skoda Enyaq has a larger boot, and the Kia EV6 is slightly nicer to drive. We’re splitting hairs here though, because this is an excellent electric car.
Used Hyundai Ioniq 5 alternatives
If the Hyundai Ioniq 5 doesn’t float your boat, here are a few other used EVs I’d recommend:
- Kia EV6: It looks great and it’s fantastic to drive, even though it’s slightly firmer over bumps than the Hyundai.
- Skoda Enyaq: A no-nonsense family car with a cavernous interior, just not quite as exciting to look at.
- Tesla Model Y: This is a properly high-tech electric SUV, and you get access to Tesla’s excellent Supercharger network, you’ll just need to get used to the lack of buttons inside.
