Is the Kia EV6 the Best Electric SUV You Can Buy?
January 27, 2025 by Jamie Edkins
Car changing is a big deal
The Kia EV6 has been around for a few years now, and it’s been given a refresh for 2025. Let’s find out if the changes add to this car’s appeal
One of our favourite electric SUVs has been given a mid-life facelift – the Kia EV6. It sports sharper headlights, an angular front bumper, and distinctive LED lightbars that stretch across the rear. These updates enhance an already futuristic design which is bound to turn heads.
Step inside and you’ll find that the EV6 has a properly modern cabin. The centrepiece is a pair of 12.3-inch curved displays, which are clear and easy to use. Kia’s decision to stick with physical controls for key functions is a welcome one, because having buttons to operate the climate controls is much easier than digging around on the screen.
Storage is another strong suit. Up front there’s a massive centre console bin, large door pockets, two cupholders, and you can get a wireless phone charging pad. Rear passengers are treated to plenty of legroom, although taller adults may find the sloping roofline restricts headspace. The flat floor means three adults can sit comfortably. Reclining rear seats and a fold-down armrest add to the comfort.
The boot is practical at 490 litres but it’s slightly smaller than the Hyundai Ioniq 5 or Volkswagen ID5. However, a handy front storage area under the bonnet is perfect for storing charging cables.
With an upgraded 84kWh battery, the latest EV6 has an official range of up to 361 miles, depending on the model. You’ll see around 280-300 miles in the real world, which is still pretty impressive, but a Peugeot E-3008 will go further on a charge. And when you do need to recharge, the EV6’s ultra-fast 258kW charging capability means you can go from 10-80% charge in just 18 minutes—barely enough time for a coffee stop. Home charging takes around 12 hours at 7kW, making overnight top-ups simple.
Out on the road the EV6 is a lovely place to spend time. The suspension is firm enough to keep you from getting seasick on a twisty road, but compliant enough to tackle Britain’s pothole-ridden streets. Around town, the regenerative braking system and light steering make it effortless to drive, while on motorways, it feels composed and refined.
Starting at just over £45,000, even the base-spec ‘Air’ model comes well-equipped, featuring heated seats, adaptive cruise control, and wireless smartphone connectivity. Step up to GT-Line trims for extra luxury, such as artificial leather seats and a head-up display. Safety is top-notch too, with a five-star Euro NCAP rating and advanced driver aids.
Stylish, spacious, and a joy to drive, the Kia EV6 is a top contender in the electric SUV market. It’s proof that going electric doesn’t mean compromising on design, practicality, or performance.
