The Range Rover is an iconic SUV which is famed for its blend of luxury and unstoppable off-road ability, but is the latest model still up to the task? We take the wheel to find out.

The latest full-size Range Rover builds upon the success of the previous four generations. It’s always been the go-to choice for the rich and famous thanks to its imposing styling, class-leading luxury and effortless performance, and the latest one has been improved in pretty much all of these areas.

The exterior design will be familiar to any Range Rover fans out there. It may not have changed dramatically compared to the old car, but some subtle tweaks make it look even more modern and desirable. It has a more smooth and sleek appearance compared to the old car, thanks in part to small details like the window seals which are hidden behind the door rather than being exposed, and the rear lights remain hidden in slim black panels until they’re illuminated.

Step inside and you’re greeted by acres of lovely leather and classy wood trim. The build quality may not be quite on par with German alternatives such as the Audi Q7, but there’s something about the Range Rover which just makes it feel like a more special place to sit. Speaking of sitting, you sink into the sumptuous front seats like you would your favourite armchair at home.

It’s a pretty clean and minimalist cabin, and it was further de-cluttered in 2024 with the removal of the physical climate control and drive mode knobs. It makes the cabin look quite cool, but having everything routed through the 13.1-inch touchscreen is pretty annoying, as it’s quite laggy and fiddly to use.

This won’t bother the rear seat passengers though, who are treated to the same level of luxury as those up front. There’s loads of legroom, and the seats recline to almost a laying position for road trip napping. You can even spec screens for both rear seat passengers to keep them amused on long journeys with video streaming services.

On the move it quickly becomes obvious that the Range Rover is tuned for comfort over anything else. As soon as you shut the door you’re isolated from any obtrusive noises outside, and it’s even whisper quiet at motorway speeds. The air suspension does a fantastic job of ironing out bumps in the road, although it does wallow around quite a lot if you try to push it hard down a country road. A BMW X7 is a more fun SUV to drive, but if you want a car which soothes your brow as you glide home then this is it.

For such a massive car, the Range Rover isn’t even intimidating to drive. You get great all-round visibility thanks to the vast amount of glass, and the four-wheel steering makes the turning circle almost as tight as some hatchbacks. It’s also hugely capable off-road, just like every full-size Range Rover which went before. The vast majority of owners won’t ever use 10% of this car’s ability off the beaten track, but it’s good to know that the overflow car park at Henley Regatta won’t be an issue.

It may be a costly way to move you and your family about, with prices starting from over £100,000 and even pushing north of £200,000 if you get carried away with options, but the Range Rover remains one of the most luxurious and capable SUVs you can buy. Cars don’t get much more desirable than this either.
