Is the Mercedes-AMG CLA 35 Shooting Brake a good car?
As estate cars go, the Mercedes-AMG CLA 35 Shooting Brake is more overnight bag than suitcase. But although it’s not the largest load-hauler for people or luggage, it’s a proper performance car.
Don’t let the subtle looks fool you, though. This is a true AMG pretending to be a sober and sensible family holdall.
Mercedes-AMG made a number of tweaks to the car for 2024. Look closely and you might spot the new taillights and headlights, and there’s an AMG-specific radiator grille to make the CLA 35 standout from lesser models. You also have a choice of new alloy wheel designs, in sizes from 18 inches upwards.
Inside, there’s a new steering wheel with a double-spoke design and buttons to change driving mode without taking your hands from the wheel.
Like its quicker brother, the 45 S, the CLA 35 has also upgraded to the latest MBUX infotainment system. It gives the cabin a lift and includes a screen design that’s reserved for AMG models.
Under the bonnet, the CLA 35 now comes with mild hybrid assistance. The car can’t run on electricity alone, but has a little electrical assistance to take strain off the engine, improving economy and reducing emissions. The latest model has an official fuel consumption figure of 32.9mpg.
The AMG CLA 35 Shooting Brake isn't quite as wild to look at or drive as the 45 S, but it's a better companion for everyday driving duties
Just because it’s a mild hybrid, don’t go thinking this AMG has gone all soft. The 2.0-litre turbocharged engine has 306hp, enough power for a 0-62mph time of 4.9 seconds. That’s some way off the 4.1 seconds of the 45 S model, but unless you must have the ultimate in performance the CLA 35 is better value for money and easier to drive in everyday situations.
You won’t feel short-changed if you choose the more affordable model. It’s quick, nimble, and rewarding to drive. Power goes to all four wheels, which helps make the most of the AMG’s performance, even in bad weather.
The recent tweaks to the interior haven’t changed the fundamentals. There’s plenty of space in the front, but the back of the car is more cramped. There are many estates at this price that have more adult-friendly back seats than the CLA 35. But then most of them are nothing like as good to drive.
Boot space is pretty generous for a compact estate with style as much of a priority as practicality, but if you need maximum boot capacity from your fast estate, the Cupra Leon Estate is worth a look.
