Is the Mercedes-AMG E 53 Saloon a good car?
Like that clever kid in class who had the answer for every question, the Mercedes-AMG E 53 Saloon seems to have all the bases covered. It’s quick yet efficient, comfortable yet dynamically sharp, and has all the luxury and cutting-edge tech you could want.
It’s not the only budding genius in its class, though. The BMW 550e xDrive has a similarly capable plug-in hybrid powertrain at a lower starting price. The Porsche Panamera in 4S E-Hybrid form is also a capable contender and similarly expensive.
Neither is quite as quick on paper as the overachieving E 53, though. That may be because it produces a class-leading 612hp from its 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six engine and electric motor combination. That equals the old E63 V8’s power output, although economy figures should be far better if you can make the most of the estimated 59 miles of all-electric range.
Extremely fast and decadently luxurious, the new E53 AMG saloon edges closer to perfection – but it’s pricier than ever
The 2024 update may look very similar to the old E-Class, but this is no mid-life refresh. This is an all-new design that has some of the latest tech features available in any car. The interior now shares its design cues with the larger S-Class, and the E 53 comes standard with a central 14.4-inch touchscreen display. A dashboard-encompassing MBUX Superscreen is optional, giving the interior a futuristic spaceship vibe, as well as extending functionality to the front passenger.
Advanced driver aids like evasive manoeuvre support and a dash cam are standard and can be upgraded to near autonomous assistance levels. Tick a few more boxes, and you can stream videos, play games, or host conference calls, all from the comfort of your fully electric, heated seat.
Boot space is slightly lower than in non-hybrid E-Class models, shrinking from 540 to 370 litres. This is slightly below what the hybrid Panamera offers but still enough for a few large suitcases and some smaller bags.

The Mercedes-AMG E53 Saloon costs between about £90,000 and £150,000, depending on your trim. There are three basic specifications to choose from called Premium, Premium Plus Night Edition, and Edition 1.
Even the ‘entry-level’ Premium trim comes packed with kit, but if you plan to add features like the MBUX Superscreen and intense Burmester 4D surround sound system, going for one of the higher trims will likely work out cheaper.
The range-topping Edition 1 model comes with some unique interior trim elements, but for our money, the mid-level Premium Plus Night Edition hits the sweet spot.
