Is the Mercedes E-Class Coupe a good car?

The Mercedes E-Class Coupe is a large two-door coupe that’s based on the E-Class saloon. You want something a bit sleeker-looking, but with the Mercedes’ luxurious cabin and comfortable ride intact? This could be the car for you. It’s like the E-Class that hangs around by the bike sheds – it’s just cooler than the rest of the range.

The Coupe’s flowing roofline, small rear windows and rounded features make the already-handsome E-Class design look even better from the outside. It’s just as good on the inside as well. The cabin uses lots of high-quality materials including tactile wood trim and aluminium to great effect.

Some recent upgrades, especially to the car’s tech, mean it’s bang up to date too. The new ‘MBUX’ infotainment set-up was added, which means all cars get a pair of 12.3-inch display screens on the dashboard. The right-hand screen is used as an instrument display, though it can also display sat-nav maps and lots of other info right below your eye-line. The second screen is a touchscreen and is used to access and control the media system.

All this is identical to the saloon and estate variants of the E-Class, but the Coupe isn’t as practical as those models – it is a two-door, after all. The front seats slide forward electronically at the touch of a button, but getting into the rear seats isn’t that easy. Once you’re inside, there’s a decent amount of room, but there’s not as much headroom as in the other versions of the E-Class. Fitting a child seat is awkward, too.

The Mercedes E-Class Coupe has an acceptable 425-litre boot, which is good for a couple of suitcases and will be plenty for a two-person holiday, but it’s not much good for a family. The opening isn’t the best shape for loading and unloading luggage, and even with the rear seats folded down there’s not a huge amount of room because the gap into the cabin is a bit small.

With little in the way of direct alternatives, it's tough to give context to the capacity figures, but they're less than the BMW 4 Series (440 litres) and Audi A5 (455 litres), both of which are smaller cars. Not fantastic, then.

Still, if you want practicality then get the saloon or estate model instead. Where the Mercedes E-Class Coupe needs to shine is out on the road, and it’s very good there. Adaptive suspension means you can switch between Comfort and Sport modes depending on whether you’re on a bumpy motorway or a smooth mountain road.

You don't buy a Mercedes E-Class Coupe to set the best lap time, you buy it to waft in complete comfort

Higher-powered E53 models get air suspension as standard, which has an ever-greater range of adjustment, but these models are thirsty and expensive to buy. Still, with a 435hp turbocharged V6 under the bonnet, they’re fast – and the latest versions even have mild hybrid technology to improve economy a little.

It wouldn’t be hard to argue that the E220d diesel model is the best value – it’ll return around 50mpg and is the cheapest model in the range. If diesel isn’t for you, there’s an E300 petrol model with mild-hybrid tech. It will return about 36mpg, but it’s quieter and smoother than the diesel four-cylinder so might be a better choice overall. Other engines include a 3.0-litre diesel six-cylinder with 330hp and a 367hp petrol six-cylinder.

The E-Class saloon got a five-star rating from Euro NCAP in 2016, so the Coupe should be similarly safe. You can add the Driving Assistance Plus pack to add some autonomous driving technology and to help with safety on motorways, too. Shame it isn’t standard, mind.

If you’re looking for a stylish, comfortable and luxurious car that could take you to the south of France in total comfort, the E-Class Coupe is well worth a look.
