I really liked this electric car when it was new, and now you can pick one up for a steal

It’s comfortable, fast and packed with tech, and used prices are looking temptingly low.

Back in 2022 I flew to Germany to drive the new Mercedes EQE. It was a fairly chaotic launch thanks to a football game which was on at the same time, and we managed to upset the German police, but once we were clear of the mayhem I was impressed by this electric saloon car.

The first thing which struck me was just how comfortable the EQE was. The air suspension did a great job of ironing out bumps in the road, and it felt super solid and refined on the motorway. It was even relaxing at its 134mph top speed on the autobahn.

The comfort wasn’t the only thing which impressed – the technology was also really good. The standard portrait touchscreen is clear and easy to use, and the digital driver’s display is great as well.

It’s been a couple of years now since the Mercedes EQE was first launched, and now you can find some great used deals on one through Carwow. I found a nicely specced AMG Line Premium model from 2023 for £40,400, almost half the price it would have fetched when it was new.

Being the AMG Line version you get larger alloy wheels and a more sporty-looking bodykit, although the EQE isn’t the best-looking electric car you can buy. Still, at least that slightly iffy styling has an upside – it’s super aerodynamic which helps you get more range. The 300 model I found will do 365 miles on a charge.

There is one other problem I have with the Mercedes EQE, and that’s the interior. While it looks great and all the technology works well, there are bits of it which don’t feel quite as premium as you’d expect in a car as expensive as this. A BMW i5 feels posher inside.

Look past this though and the Mercedes EQE is a fantastic used purchase. If you were looking to buy a new electric car for £40,000 then you could look at a Tesla Model 3 or a Volkswagen ID4, but the EQE is more luxurious and has a more desirable image.
