Is a second hand MG4 a good car?

As a new car, the MG4 is one of the best value EVs on the market. As a used car, it’s an absolute steal.

Used car buyers tend to be less convinced by electric cars than new car shoppers, which makes some of the best EVs surprisingly cheap used buys. And while it’s not faultless by any means, the MG4 is a very good EV.

It looks great for a start – part sports car, part hatchback, part sci-fi shuttlecraft. If it wore a more upmarket badge, trend-surfing buyers would swoon and happily part with at least another £10k to own one.

The drive very nearly lives up to the looks. Plenty of electric cars are quick, but remote and anodyne to drive. The MG4 is lively and agile. Whether you choose the 170hp, 204hp, or the 245hp model, performance is strong enough to put a grin on your face and keep it there.

MG has cleverly tuned the suspension so that fun doesn’t come at the expense of comfort. It’s more forgiving of potholes and speed bumps than many stiff-riding EVs.

Inside, the MG4 is roomy in the front and the dashboard is modern. The rear of the cabin is made of cheaper looking materials, though.

While we’re listing bad points, the front seat bases sit low to the floor so there’s not a lot of room underneath for rear-seat passengers’ feet.

Another minus for some is the lack of a one-pedal driving mode, which would use strong regenerative braking so the driver would rarely need to touch the brakes. The infotainment is fiddly, and the smallest of the available batteries gives a modest range of 218 miles according to the official figures. Reliability could be better, too.

For the money, though, few used EVs come close.

What to look for when buying a used MG4

MG has made big strides in recent years, but it still has some work to do when it comes to reliability. The MG4 isn’t as dependable as most alternatives, judging by the latest reliability surveys.

The good news is the car comes with a seven-year, 80,000-mile warranty which transfers to the new owner when the car is sold, so any faults within should be covered. The high-voltage battery is guaranteed to retain a capacity of at least 70% during that time, or it will be repaired or replaced.

Before you buy an MG4, check carefully that all the car’s features work as they should –especially anything controlled through the infotainment screen. Make sure the car still has its charging cables. There should be a Type 2 cable for connecting with dedicated EV charging points and wallboxes, and a three-pin cable that connects to a domestic socket.

MG4 FAQs

The MG4 can be plugged into a wallbox for charging at home, or a public charging point while you’re out and about. At a pinch it can be charged from a normal domestic socket, but a dedicated EV charger is better.

That depends on the size of the battery. There are three sizes, with a usable capacity of 50.8, 61.7, or 74.4kWh. If the battery is being recharged from fully flat, that’s how many kWh you would need for a full battery. Just remember, it’s never a good idea to drain an EV battery down to empty.

Most Tesla charging stations are exclusively for Tesla owners, but recently some have been available for wider use. These open-access chargers can be used to top-up an MG4’s battery, so long as the driver has downloaded the Tesla app.

Using a 7kW charger (the kind many EV owners have at home), a 10-100% recharge takes just under eight hours to just over 10 hours depending on which battery size the MG4 is fitted with. Using a 150kW public charger can reduce that to just under 40 minutes.

It’s more of a hatchback than an SUV. The styling makes the MG4 look like a five-door sports car, so it’s not an easy car to pigeonhole.

The MG4 is made in China, although some of the design work took place in the UK.
