This is the new Gordon Murray Automotive T.33 Spider, and it has a pretty special claim to fame. It is the only new open-top, manual V12-engined car you can buy today.

Carwow was given the chance to walk around a pre-production version of this new supercar with Gordon Murray himself, and you can check it out in the video below.

New Gordon Murray Automotive T.33 Spider design

At a glance, you might not look at the new T.33 Spider and think it was a bonkers V12 supercar, however this is deliberate. Every vent and wing you see on this car serves a purpose.

Up front, you have pretty much the same design as the T.33 Coupe. You have a small inlet to direct air under the floor and into the rear diffuser, but other than that the design is clean and simple.

The attention to detail that’s gone into this car is clear when you realise that it’s been completely redesigned from the A-pillar and back compared to the coupe. Incidentally, both the coupe and the Spider were designed at the same time to make sure the proportions worked.

The rollover protection is built into the fixed section of the roof in order to improve aerodynamics, and you have a deployable rear window to separate you from the engine.

New Gordon Murray Automotive T.33 Spider engine and performance

The T.33 Spider uses the same 4.0-litre naturally-aspirated V12 engine as the coupe. It’s been developed by Cosworth, and it puts out 617hp and 451Nm of torque. You’ll be able to enjoy the sounds of that engine as well thanks to the roof scoop sucking in air right above your head.

This is paired to a six-speed manual gearbox, something of a rarity in a modern supercar. There’s no option of an automatic here, it’s three pedals or nothing.

New Gordon Murray Automotive T.33 Spider chassis and suspension

The new T.33 Spider uses the same carbon fibre chassis as the coupe, and it’s so stiff that the Spider doesn’t need any additional bracing. As a result, Gordon Murray Automotive says it should weigh just 18kg more than the coupe, coming in at 1,108kg. That’s around 100kg less than a modern Mini.

The suspension setup is also the same as the Coupe’s, the aluminium double wishbones all around, as well as coilover springs. There’s no adaptive setup either, it’s fine-tuned from the factory.

You have carbon ceramic brakes to make sure the car stops as well as it goes, and you also get Michelin performance tyres. They’re not some unique T.33-only design either, you can buy them anywhere.

The cabin of the new T.33 Spider is very similar to that of the Coupe, meaning everything is designed to be functional. You have two screens either side of the analogue rev counter, one for your car settings and one for your infotainment.

Your interior is also built around you. When you buy a T.33 spider, you’ll go in to have measurements taken and the car will be made specifically for you. The position of the pedals and steering wheel can be tailored to you, and there are even different shapes of seat to fit all backsides.
