  • Posh petrol-powered SUV gets a facelift
  • Refreshed exterior styling
  • Improved interior and infotainment
  • Petrol and plug-in hybrid engines available
  • Likely to cost around £65,000

The current Volvo XC90 has been around for nine years now, so it’s well overdue an update. Thankfully, it’s been given just that.

Not only does the BMW X5 alternative get refreshed styling, it also has an all-new interior and a revised range of hybrid engines.

New Volvo XC90 design

At a glance it doesn’t look like the Volvo XC90 has changed all that much, but this is no bad thing. This stylish SUV has just been given a nip and tuck makeover to keep it in line with the brand’s electric cars.

The main difference up front is the new headlights, which have been reshaped to look more akin to the ones found on the electric EX90. The front bumper and grille are also completely redesigned, with new air intakes featured lower down.

Down the side it’s business as usual, with the XC90 retaining its smooth, pebble-like appearance. There are a variety of new alloy wheel designs, ranging from 20-22 inches in size. A new dark red colour scheme has also been added.

Changes to the rear are limited to a new set of smoked LED tail lights, which look much more contemporary than the current car’s. The rear bumper is also slightly altered

New Volvo XC90 interior and infotainment

It’s the interior of the new XC90 which has seen the biggest change. The outgoing car’s cabin was cutting-edge when it launched in 2015, but it’s looking a bit old-hat now. This new one is a much more enticing proposition.

There are a wide range of different wood trims you can have across the dashboard, which look much nicer than the swathe of black plastic you got in the outgoing car. The air vents are also now tall and thin, and the infotainment screen sits proud of the dash.

It’s an 11.2-inch touchscreen, an extra 2.2 inches over the outgoing car, and it’s running all-new infotainment software. It’s a Google-based system, just like in the EX30 and EX90, meaning you get Google Maps and Google Assistant built in.

As with other Volvos these days, there are plenty of recycled and eco-friendly materials inside. The seats can be trimmed in a fabric made of recycled polyester, or there’s the option of animal-free leather. Nappa leather is also available.

New Volvo XC90 engines and performance

The new Volvo XC90 will be sold alongside the new, all-electric EX90, and as such it’s not been given EV power. Under the bonnet you can choose between three petrol engines, one of which is a plug-in hybrid with over 44 miles of all-electric range.

It’s badged as the T8, and it’s actually the same system you got in the old XC90. This means it has a combined 455hp between the 2.0-litre petrol engine and the electric motor, and this luxurious SUV will do 0-60mph in 5.1 seconds.

There are two more petrol engines on offer, however these are mild hybrids which don’t offer any meaningful all-electric driving – they’ll be able to shunt along in traffic without the engine, but that’s about it. You’ll get to choose between 250hp and 300hp variants, which will do 0-60mph in 7.3 seconds and 6.4 seconds respectively.

New Volvo XC90: how much is it?

Volvo hasn’t put a price on the new XC90 just yet, but it will do in the next few weeks. You can expect it to fetch a small premium over the outgoing model though, with a figure of around £65,000 likely.
