Used car of the week: a BMW M2 for Vauxhall Corsa money

Car changing is a big deal
A mid-range Vauxhall Corsa Electric will cost you around £30,000, or you could get yourself a used BMW M2 Competition for the same price…
The Vauxhall Corsa Electric is a great little EV. It’s comfortable, well-equipped and stylish, – but it’s not cheap.
An entry-level Corsa Electric will set you back almost £27,000, with mid-spec GS models pushing north of £30,000. For that sort of money, you could have something far more exciting.
We’re talking about the BMW M2 Competition. That’s right; you could have a 3.0-litre straight-six-engined German sports coupe for the same price as a Vauxhall hatchback.
We found this 2019 model with 44,000 miles on the clock for £30,400. It looks smart, finished in Alpine White with gloss black alloy wheels, and the full-leather interior features body-hugging sports seats and a sports steering wheel.
That 3.0-litre engine sends 410hp to the rear wheels only via an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, so it’s blisteringly fast and great fun to drive on a country road. It’s not a one-trick pony either, because the M2 is also comfortable enough for day-to-day use and the boot is a decent size as well. The rear seats are a bit tight though.
Obviously there are some drawbacks to choosing this ballistic German missile over a sensible electric hatchback, the main one being running costs. The honking great six-cylinder engine in the M2 will be quite thirsty compared to the efficient Corsa Electric, and insurance costs for the BMW will also be much higher.
It’s very much a heart-over-head purchase, but there’s nothing wrong with injecting a bit of excitement into your daily commute.
