Jaguar has just unveiled the Type 00 at Miami Art Week. It’s an all-electric luxury coupe, a bit like the Rolls Royce Spectre, and it’ll go on sale in 2026 with all-new battery tech, over 470 miles of range and a price tag of more than £100,000.
The British brand has been making waves over the past weeks and months. First it announced that it would stop making cars for a year, then it completely rebranded with a bold and controversial new look and a crazy ad campaign to match.
New Jaguar Type 00 design
The Jaguar Type 00 represents a new beginning for Jaguar as it moves away from petrol-powered BMW and Mercedes alternatives and starts making all-electric luxury cars to rival Bentley and Rolls Royce.
You can tell this car was designed from a fresh sheet of paper, because it looks like nothing you’ve ever seen from the brand before. That front end is properly villainous, like it would be driven by the bad guy in a superhero movie.
It has a bonnet which would be considered long even if it had a thumping great V12 under there, but it’s even weirder when you consider this has no engine at all. It gives the car “unmistakable presence” according to Gerry McGovern, Chief Creative Officer at Jaguar – so it is literally just a stylistic choice.
The front bumper also features Jaguar’s new wordmark in amongst a load of horizontal lines, and these lines are a big part of the brand’s new design language. They feature on the front bumper, as well as on the bonnet where they run through into the cabin.
The side profile is just as imposing. It looks incredibly low and sleek, with a fastback rear end which may put you in mind of the Rolls Royce Spectre – or even the Chrysler Crossfire. The enormous 23-inch alloy wheels also add to this car’s muscular stance.
There’s a large compartment just behind the front wheel, and that actually serves a rather strange purpose – it’s where you stow your totems. These are blocks of natural materials such as brass and alabaster which you place in a slot in the centre console, and that changes the mood of the car by adjusting things like the cabin lighting and driving modes – seriously.
Moving to the rear things get even more wacky. One of Jaguar’s new buzzwords is “Copy nothing”, but it copied the Polestar 4 here by doing away with the rear window. Those horizontal lines have appeared at the back as well, with the taillights hidden within them. It’s certainly a bold choice, even if it does look a bit like a commercial air conditioning unit
New Jaguar Type 00 interior
The Type 00’s cabin is just as captivating as the exterior, with a minimalist design and plenty of unusual materials helping it stand out.
The stand-out feature here is what appears to be a bannister splitting the car down the middle. This 3.2-metre-long brass beam is mimicked on both doors as well. The dashboard then features yet more lines which are continued from the bonnet.
You may be wondering where the infotainment system is hiding; after all, no luxury car is complete these days without an entire branch of Currys glued to the dashboard – we’re looking at you, Mercedes Hyperscreen. Well there are two large displays hidden in here, and they pop out from under the dashboard.
You get one in front of the driver and one for the passenger, and between the two displays they take up the entire width of the car. The graphics also change depending on which of your mood stones you’ve placed in the centre console – it’s all very zen.
New Jaguar Type 00 batteries and motors
This radical design stuff is all well and good, but what’s going on underneath that outlandish bodywork? Well the Type 00 is based on an all-new range of EV parts – collectively called the “Jaguar Electric Architecture”.
While there are no exact details around power or battery size, we know that the pack will be exclusive to Jaguar and won’t be borrowed from other cars in the Jaguar Land Rover family. It has been confirmed that the Type 00 will have 478 miles of range though, and it’ll be able to charge quickly enough to gain 200 miles of range in as little as 15 minutes.
As for power, you can expect to see a dual motor setup giving the car all-wheel drive, however exact figures are yet to be nailed down. Being a luxury car of this size you can expect more than 500hp on tap, however you’ll have to wait for the production car to be revealed to find out for sure.
When can I buy the new Jaguar Type 00?
Not for a while yet. Jaguar is taking a break from making cars in 2025 while it gets its posh electric ducks in a row, so a production version of the Type 00 isn’t expected until 2026, and it’s expected to cost over £100,000.
