Mazda has just unveiled its second electric car: the new 6e. It’s a fabulous-looking electric saloon with an interior to match, and you’ll be able to get a model with 345 miles of range.
This alternative to the Tesla Model 3 and Polestar 2 will go on sale in the UK in 2026, with prices likely to start from around £50,000.
New Mazda 6e design
Mazda rarely disappoints when it comes to design, and this is a stunning-looking saloon car. You may remember the petrol-powered 6 which went off sale a few years ago, well this car brings some of that car’s style back to life, albeit with a modern twist.
Up front you have a wide and imposing grille which is surrounded with an LED strip, and this is framed by the slim headlights. The bonnet line is also nice and low, making the 6e look properly sporty.
Down the side there are plenty of sharp creases and complex contours to keep things looking interesting and modern. The 19-inch wheels aren’t massive by modern standards, but they still fill the arches nicely.
The sloping roofline leads you down to a neat ducktail spoiler on the boot lid, and the full-width light bar looks great as well.
New Mazda 6e interior and infotainment
Step inside and you’ll see that the Mazda 6e’s cabin is just as stylish as the exterior. It’s a clean and neat design, without being quite as stripped-back as a Tesla’s interior. The black and beige contrast keeps things interesting, and there are some funky-looking materials around the place as well.
The tall centre console serves to cocoon the driver and make the cabin feel like a more sporty place to sit, and there’s a panoramic glass roof to keep things feeling airy and spacious.
Standing proud in the centre of the dashboard is a 14.6-inch touchscreen, which is supplemented by a 10.2-inch digital driver’s display and an optional augmented reality head-up display.
New Mazda 6e motors and batteries
The only other all-electric Mazda up until now was the MX-30, and that car had one vital flaw which put a lot of buyers off: it only had 124 miles of range. Well the new Mazda 6e has no such issues thanks to a pair of new battery options, the smallest of which has double the capacity of the MX-30’s pack.
Entry-level cars get a 69kWh battery capable of delivering 300 miles of range, and it can charge from 10-80% in 22 minutes at a DC rapid charger. Then there’s the 80kWh pack, which gives the 6e 345 miles of range. That’s some way off a Tesla Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive, that car will do 436 miles between charging stops, but it’s still plenty for the vast majority of people.
All versions of the 6e are powered by a single motor on the rear axle, and Mazda knows a thing or two about making fun cars so this should be one of the more engaging EVs on the market to drive.
Cars with the smaller battery fitted get 258hp, while long-range models have 244hp. Both are pretty evenly matched in terms of performance, completing the 0-60mph spring in 7.6 and 7.8 seconds respectively. That’s almost 2.0 seconds slower than a rear-wheel drive Model 3 Long Range.
New Mazda 6e: when can I buy one?
The new Mazda 6e will go on sale in early 2026, however it’s a bit early to put an exact price on this car yet. Given the starting price of its alternatives, a figure of around £50,000 is to be expected.
