Car changing is a big deal
Aston Martin has lopped the roof off its Vantage sports car so you can enjoy wind-in-the-hair V8 thrills.
- New Aston Martin Vantage Roadster revealed
- Drop-top version of entry-level sports car
- Very similar styling to the coupe
- Uses the same V8 engine as that car as well
- 0-60mph in 3.5 seconds and 202mph top speed
- First deliveries starting in the spring
This is the new Aston Martin Vantage Roadster; a convertible version of its entry-level sports car. It still uses a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, and performance remains the same as the coupe.
Order books will open in a few weeks time, with first deliveries of this Porsche 911 Cabriolet alternative starting in the spring.
New Aston Martin Vantage Roadster design
There are no surprises when it comes to the new Vantage Roadster’s design, because it looks just like a Vantage coupe with the roof chopped off.
You have the same gaping grille up front flanked by slicked-back oval headlights. It’s only when you look at this car from the side that you see the design changes. Like almost every modern convertible, the Vantage Roadster has a cloth roof. This can be specified in either black, black and silver, red or blue.
A handful of new paint colour options have been added as well, including this rather fetching matte blue. The rear end is pretty much identical to the coupe, with massive quad tailpipes and a sleek light bar.
New Aston Martin Vantage Roadster engine and performance
Under the bonnet of the Aston Martin Vantage Roadster you’ll find the same 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine as the coupe, producing the same 665hp and 800Nm of torque.
Chopping the roof off a car usually means adding extra metal to strengthen the structure, which in turn adds weight. Aston Martin has managed to get away with only adding 60kg to this car compared with the coupe, and as a result the performance is identical.
It’ll do 0-60mph in 3.5 seconds, just 0.1 of a second slower than the hard-top. A Porsche 911 Carrera GTS Cabriolet will complete the sprint in 3.1 seconds, although flat-out it’ll do 194mph, whereas the Vantage has a 202mph top speed.
New Aston Martin Vantage Roadster prices
The new Aston Martin Vantage Roadster will go on sale in the next few weeks, with first deliveries starting in the spring. Prices haven’t been announced yet, but you can expect to pay a premium over the coupe to enjoy the millions of miles of extra headroom. A figure of over £170,000 is therefore likely.
