Farewell to the Ford Focus: here are some alternatives worth considering
January 23, 2025 by Jamie Edkins
Car changing is a big deal
With the Ford Focus facing the axe this year, what cars should you consider instead? Here are five great alternatives.
The Ford Focus is facing the chopping block in 2025, and for those who have come to love the Focus as a practical hatchback which is great fun to drive, this will be a significant loss. It’s time to start looking for alternatives to the Focus – we’ve compiled the top five for you.
- Volkswagen Golf
- Vauxhall Astra
- SEAT Leon
- Kia Ceed
- Honda Civic
What makes a good Ford Focus alternative?
The Ford Focus has been around for 26 years, with millions of units sold. This comes as no surprise, because it has a lot to offer. Any alternative to the Focus should be:
- Practical
- Fun to drive
- Generously equipped
- Cheap to run
- Great value for money
Volkswagen Golf
The Ford’s deadliest rival is now one of the best alternatives. The Volkswagen Golf starts from just under £28,000, almost exactly the same as the Focus, and it’s a simply brilliant all-rounder. It may not be as fun as a Focus on a twisty road, but it’s more comfortable for day-to-day driving and it’s hugely practical as well.
Vauxhall Astra
Priced from just over £29,500, the Vauxhall Astra is a stylish alternative to the Focus which comes loaded with kit as standard. It’s reasonably practical as well, although the boot isn’t quite as big as the Focus, and it’s comfortable to drive on a long journey. There’s also a range of peppy and efficient engines on offer.
SEAT Leon
If you like the idea of a Volkswagen Golf but it’s a bit too vanilla for you, then the SEAT Leon could be a good shout. It’s basically the same as the VW under the skin, but it has more sporty styling and it’s a few thousand pounds cheaper than both the Focus and the Golf. It represents great value for money, but it’s a shame the boot isn’t all that big.
Kia Ceed
The Kia Ceed is an often overlooked hatchback in this segment, but there are plenty of reasons to consider it. You get an excellent seven-year warranty, loads of standard equipment and it’s quite practical as well. It may not be particularly exciting, but it’ll serve you well as an honest workhorse.
Honda Civic
The current Honda Civic comes with only one engine option, but it’s an excellent one. The 2.0-litre hybrid is powerful, economical and smooth, and it’s fantastic to drive as well thanks to a blend of sharp handing and great comfort. The interior is also really well-built, if not all that exciting to look at, and it’s practical as well.
