This much-loved sports car is going all-electric next year, here’s what we know so far

Car changing is a big deal
It’ll serve as an alternative to an all-electric version of the Alpine A110 which is also in the works
- New Porsche 718 Cayman EV spotted testing
- Baby sports car goes electric for the first time
- Similar exterior styling to the outgoing model
- More than 400hp possible
- On sale in 2026
Porsche is on a mission to electrify its range. The Macan went all-electric in 2024, a Cayenne EV is in development, and then there’s the brand’s baby sports car – the Cayman – which will be losing its petrol engine in 2026.
Turning this peppy, lightweight coupe into an EV was always going to raise a few eyebrows, but Porsche is working on some clever technology to make sure the new 718 Cayman, and its convertible counterpart – the Boxster, are just as fun to drive as they are now.
New Porsche Cayman EV design
The new Porsche Cayman EV retains a similarly low-slung silhouette to the current car, but you can see a few new styling details on this thinly disguised prototype.

The main one is the headlights. Those stickers aren’t fooling anyone, you can clearly see the Taycan-esque oblong lamp units poking through. This car also has some massive air vents in the lower bumper.

Moving to the rear you can see a full-width light bar, a feature which will make this car look much more modern than the outgoing Cayman. This being an EV there are no fake exhausts in sight either.
New Porsche Cayman EV motors and batteries
There are no official details about what’s powering the new Cayman, other than the fact it’ll be electric. It’ll also be mechanically identical to the convertible Boxster, and both cars could make use of bits from the Mission R Concept from a couple of years ago.

Before you get too excited, this won’t be a 1,088hp two-seater sports car. If the Cayman does borrow tech from the Mission R then it’ll be the front-mounted 435hp motor. This would be a decent increase over the 300hp you get in the current car.
It’ll need the extra power as well, because there’s no getting around the fact that batteries and motors add weight to a car. This could have the potential to spoil the handling, but Porsche could be working on a way to get around this.
Rather than having the battery mounted in the floor, it could use an upright “chest” style pack which sits in the middle of the car. This would make the weight distribution more akin to a mid-engined car, which will have a drastic effect on the way it handles.
When can I buy the new Porsche Cayman EV?
It’ll be 2026 before you can buy the new Porsche Cayman EV, but a reveal of the car could happen before the end of this year. Expect to see an increase in price over the current car’s £54,000 figure.
