Car changing is a big deal
The new BMW M5 has only been around for a few months, but a mid-life facelift is already in the works with styling cues from the upcoming 3 Series.
- Facelifted BMW M5 spotted already
- Front-end styling from the next 3 Series
- Styling changes likely to apply to 5 Series as well
- Engine expected to stay the same
- May get slightly more power
- Updated car is a couple of years away
This is your first look at the updated BMW M5. You may be thinking “hang on a minute, the M5’s only been here a few months, why is it getting updated already?”. A perfectly reasonable question, and the answer is that it isn’t.
You see the facelift is some way off yet, this is just a very early prototype version of a car you’ll see in around 2027 at the earliest. The main difference will be the front-end styling, which takes inspiration from the next-generation BMW 3 Series.
New BMW M5 design
It’s unusual to see a facelifted version of a car testing so soon after the current model debuted, but here we are. The M5’s update looks as though it’ll bring styling inspired by the Neue Klasse Concept we saw last year, a car which will also form the foundation of the next 3 Series, M3 and iX3.

The main difference can be seen up front, where there appears to have been fairly major surgery to graft the Neue Klasse’s thin, wide kidney grilles onto the M5. It’s a much more sleek look than the current car, with the headlights neatly integrated into the grille.

The rest of the design looks as though it’ll remain mostly unchanged, although tweaked taillights with new LED patterns could feature at the rear. These changes are also likely to apply to the standard 5 Series and i5.
New BMW M5 engine and performance
Don’t expect to see any major changes under the bonnet of the next M5. The hybrid 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 will almost certainly carry over more or less unchanged.

Currently the M5 puts out 727hp and 1,000Nm of torque. When the current BMW M2 was facelifted last year, it got a 20hp boost from 510hp to 530hp. It wouldn’t be surprising to see a similar jump from the updated M5, so it could have around 750hp.
When can I buy the new BMW M5?

Not for a while yet. The current BMW M5 has been on sale in the UK for mere months, so this updated version is a good couple of years away yet. Expect to see a debut in around 2027.
