New Audi A6 Avant revealed: a big estate car with an identity crisis

Car changing is a big deal
This is the replacement for the Audi A6 Avant, which was going to be called the A7 but now isn’t. Confused? You’re not alone.
- New Audi A6 Avant revealed
- Petrol-powered estate to sit alongside the A6 e-tron
- More modern styling than the outgoing car
- Totally revamped interior
- Petrol and diesel engines on offer
- Available to order in April from £52,510
Audi has finally decided on a name for the A6 Avant replacement, and it’s the A6 Avant. The German brand has U-turned on its decision to re-name it the A7, and this petrol-powered estate will be sold alongside the electric A6 Avant e-tron.
It’ll go on sale at the start of April with prices starting from £52,510, and there will be just two engines on offer: petrol or diesel.
New Audi A6 Avant design
There’s nothing particularly shocking or exciting about the way the new Audi A6 Avant looks. Like most modern Audis it’s just a handsome car which builds on the previous model with some modern touches.

Up front you have swept-back headlights which are less angular than the old car’s, and the grille is much larger as well – it almost occupies the entire bumper. You also have a range of new alloy wheels to choose from, starting at 18 inches and rising to 21s.

This is the estate version of the A6, but a saloon version will also be available at a later date. At the rear there is a new light bar and clever digital lights which you can customise with different patterns.
New Audi A6 Avant interior and infotainment
If you’ve spent any time around modern Audis, the new A6 Avant’s interior will feel very familiar. It has a very similar layout to the smaller A5 Avant, although it does look slightly different to the electric A6 e-tron.

The dashboard is dominated by a huge panel which houses the 11.9-inch digital driver’s display and 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system. You can also get an optional 10.9-inch passenger display which they can use to watch movies on the go, or help you with navigation.

It looks a lot more modern inside than the outgoing A6 Avant, with a multi-layered dashboard and swoopy panels giving it added visual appeal.
New Audi A6 Avant engines
The engine lineup for the new Audi A6 Avant is a simple one. You can choose between a petrol and a diesel. That’s your lot in the UK at least. Overseas there’s a 3.0-litre petrol V6 on offer, but that engine isn’t available on our shoes yet.

There’s a 204hp 2.0-litre petrol engine, and this will do 0-60mph in 8.3 seconds. The diesel is also 2.0 litres and has the same 204hp, but it can do 0-60mph in 7.9 seconds. A sporty S6 version is also on the cards, and that car could get the aforementioned V6 engine with around 370hp.

But what about the full-fat RS6? Well that car is some way off yet, but it’s expected to use a plug-in hybrid V8 borrowed from elsewhere in the Volkswagen group, potentially the Porsche Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid. That car has 739hp, a healthy upgrade over the 630hp you get in the current RS6.
New Audi A6 Avant price and specs
The new Audi A6 Avant will be available to order on 1 April this year, with prices starting from £52,510. That makes it around £4,000 more expensive than the car it replaces, but it’s £2,000 cheaper than a BMW 5 Series Touring. It’s also more than £5,000 less than a Mercedes E-Class Estate.

There are three trim levels available at launch: Sport, S Line and Edition 1. All cars come with heated electric leather seats, four-zone climate control, a 14.5-inch infotainment system and LED front and rear lights.

Stepping up to the S Line gets you more aggressive styling with 19-inch alloy wheels, up from 18 inches on the Sport. You also get rear privacy glass, lowered and stiffened suspension and a sporty three-spoke steering wheel.
Finally there’s the Edition 1. This gets you 20-inch alloy wheels, roof rails, gloss black exterior trim front sports seats and lane departure warning.
New Audi A6 Avant: what’s going on with the name?
Good question. Back in 2023 Audi announced that it would be completely re-working its naming structure, with even numbers being reserved for electric cars and odds being given to petrol and diesel-powered cars.
This new strategy has already been implemented with the new Audi A5, which replaced the Audi A4 to make way for a future A4 e-tron. The all-electric A6 e-tron was revealed last year, and the petrol version was meant to be called the A7 Avant – leaving a question mark over the future of the current A7 four-door coupe.
Well now Audi has changed its mind again, because it’s scrapped the new nomenclature to go back to the old one. This means the A6 Avant will retain its name and will still be a petrol-powered estate car, and it’ll be sold alongside the all-electric A6 Avant e-tron.
