If you’re heading to England’s first FIFA World Cup qualifier at Wembley Stadium this Friday, be aware that part of the M25 will be closed after the match.

As the Three Lions take on Albania on Friday 21 March, with kick-off at 7:45pm, part of the M25 will be closed in both directions for bridge demolition starting at 9pm.

The M25, between junctions 10 (Wisley) and 11 (A320 Chertsey), will be closed from 9pm on Friday 21 March, and is expected to reopen by 6am on Monday 24 March.

National Highways is urging drivers, particularly those heading to events like the England match, to carefully consider their travel plans during the closure.

Following the increased traffic on the diversion route during the last full closure (from 7-10 March), which saw more congestion than similar closures last year, drivers are advised to take extra precautions.

If you’re traveling around Surrey during this time, you’ll want to keep the following in mind:

  • Only use the motorway and surrounding roads if your journey is absolutely essential.
  • Allow extra time for your journey and consider using alternative routes where possible.
  • Follow the official diversion routes provided, rather than relying on sat-nav information, to ensure a smoother and safer travel experience.

RAC Breakdown spokesperson, Alice Simpson, also gave some advice to drivers ahead of this weekend’s M25 closures.

“This weekend’s M25 closures could present a ‘red card’ for drivers heading home from the match. With junctions 10 to 11 shutting just before the sold-out England game finishes, heavy congestion is almost inevitable for those traveling back to Sussex and Surrey. We encourage football fans to seek alternative routes where possible or use public transport to minimise queuing in traffic.

“The same advice applies to anyone using the M25 to visit London for the weekend or holidaymakers heading to Gatwick and Heathrow, both of which are easier to reach by car. It’s absolutely essential that drivers follow the official diversion routes, rather than relying solely on their sat navs, to avoid being led off-course.

“Plan your route before you set off, leave even earlier than usual, and make sure your vehicle is road-ready by checking oil and coolant levels and make sure your tyres are properly inflated.”
