Five cool features of the new Maserati GranTurismo Folgore

Car changing is a big deal
Maserati’s gone electric in style with the new GranTurismo Folgore – but it’s not just good looks. Here are five cool things we noticed
Maserati is known for gorgeous styling, snarling petrol engines, and Italian flair – not really traits that are too compatible with making the sort of electric cars that people want to buy in 2025. But the new GranTurismo Folgore is the brand’s first attempt at creating an electric sports car, and it’s done so properly.
With a usable electric range, staggering performance and super-fast charging, it’s got all the EV basics covered, but it’s still wrapped in slinky and stylish bodywork. Better yet, it still drives the way a Maserati should, rather than like a blunt instrument as so many powerful electric cars do.
It’s also laden with cool features – here are five that we noticed during our time with the car.
1. The name

Maserati GranTurismo is already a word combination that’s seriously evocative to any petrolhead – but you might be wondering about the ‘Folgore’ part. Many manufacturers simply put ‘E’ or ‘EV’ into their model names to differentiate them, or give their electric cars a new name altogether.
Maserati, however, has added on the word ‘Folgore’. Literally translated, it means ‘thunderbolt’ but a better translation would be ‘lightning’ – reflecting the car’s performance and the super-fast charging speeds it’s capable of. Cars named after weather systems aren’t automatically cool – the Renault Wind, for example – but in this case Maserati’s got it spot on.
2. The stats

Converting a petrol car to an electric vehicle can sometimes leave you with poor performance or a rubbish range. Not so with the GranTurismo Folgore – it doesn’t make any headlines with its figures, but nor does it embarrass itself.
You get a total of 761hp from the three electric motors, which is more than you get from the V6 petrol GranTurismo. That’s good for a 0-60mph time of 2.7 seconds, according to Maserati – we managed it in 2.9 seconds. Claimed range is 270 miles – we saw closer to 200 in the real world – but thanks to super-fast DC charging you can top up from 10-80% in just 18 minutes. That’s barely enough time to get an espresso. The real headline? Top speed is a staggering 202mph – faster than a Tesla Model S Plaid.
3. Performance measuring

It’s all too tempting to treat an electric car as an appliance – just point the nose where you want to go,squirt the throttle, and you’re there.
Well, the GranTurismo Folgore wants you to take more interest in what’s going on under the skin, and so the interior screens are loaded with features to track and measure your performance. You can see the temperature of the battery, the split of power between its three motors, you can time drag races or laps round a track, and you can seriously customise the drive modes. There’s a lot to play with.
4. Stylish interior

The Folgore’s interior is pretty much identical to the regular GranTurismo, which means it’s a gorgeous place to sit. You’re swathed in real leather – not the artificial stuff you get on lots of electric cars – and everything you touch feels really expensive.
It’s not just good-looking either, as you get loads of tech. The infotainment screen may be better-suited to left-hand drive markets, but it works quite well and there’s a separate display below it for easy access to the climate controls. Even the Maserati analogue clock on top of the dash is a digital facsimile these days.
5. Shockingly affordable

Okay, so the GranTurismo Folgore may have a price of nearly £200,000 – or much more if you peruse the extensive options list.
But that goes out of the window if you’re a high-up director who gets to name your own company car. Assuming your company’s happy to buy the Folgore in the first place, you’d pay just under £1,800 a year in tax to run this electric supercar – and that makes it incredibly easy to justify. Now, to convince the fleet manager…
