This is the Suzuki Jimny 6X4 – a tiny six-wheeled off-roader which cost £25,000 to convert. Because why wouldn’t you?

It takes a lot to stand out on the road these days, especially if your budget doesn’t stretch to a six-figure supercar. If you want to turn heads for less cash, I think I have the answer right here.

If you look at this car from the front it just looks like a slightly modified Suzuki Jimny, but come around to the side and you’ll notice a more significant change – an extra axle. That’s right, someone has turned this cute little off-roader into a baby Mercedes G-Wagon 6X6.

It’s called the Jimny 6X4 – I’ll get onto that shortly. An insane amount of time, work and cash went into making it, but it certainly gets you noticed out on the road.

Suzuki Jimny 6X4: exterior modifications

Let’s start with the most obvious exterior change – the extra wheels. It’s no simple task lengthening a car and adding an extra axle; the modifications were so extensive that the car had to be inspected by the DVSA and re-registered on a Q plate.

Essentially what the maker of this car has done is taken a donor Suzuki Jimny, cut the rear end off of it and added it to the back of this car. They’ve then added the pickup bed and voila – you’ve got a six-wheeled Suzuki Jimny pickup truck.

Beyond the massive rear-end changes, this Jimny has been repainted in grey and the black plastic bits of trim have been resprayed in gloss black. All the work took six months to complete, and the total cost to convert the car was £25,000.

Suzuki Jimny 6X4: interior changes

The interior has also seen some changes to make it seem less utilitarian than the standard car. Some of the changes I like, while some I’m not so sure about.

The re-trimmed leather seats are lovely, much better than the cheap fabric I have in my normal Jimny. I also like the bits of trim which have been colour coded to the exterior – such as the infotainment surround and the instrument binnacle.

What I’m not so keen on is the leather-trimmed centre console and gearstick surround – I just think it looks a bit odd. The black trim in the back has also been painted in gloss, and it feels a bit bumpy like it was sprayed in a dusty room.

Suzuki Jimny 6X4: engine, chassis and driving

There is one slightly disappointing thing about this Jimny, and that’s the fact it’s not six-wheel drive. The third axle isn’t connected, hence the name 6X4. In fairness it would’ve been far too complicated to hook up a third driven axle on a show car like this though.

Things are identical to the standard Jimny under the bonnet as well. It has a 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine with 101hp and 130Nm of torque, and it’s mated to a four-speed automatic gearbox.

This is a bit of an issue, because this 6X4 weighs 300kg more than the standard Jimny. I timed both the 6X4 and my standard Jimny from 0-60mph, and the six-wheeler was 3.8 seconds slower.

Straight-line performance has never been the Jimny’s strong suit though, and nor has on-road refinement. The standard car is technically a bit rubbish to drive. It pitches and wallows about, it’s noisy and it’s constantly wandering around the road. However, I still love it because it has so much charm and character.

The 6X4 is still a bit crap to drive, but for different reasons. Whereas the standard car wants to push wide when you throw it into a corner, this one has added weight at the back which can bring on a bit of oversteer.

It’s dynamically worse than the standard car, but in a really fun way in that you can feel the car moving about beneath you. I don’t like the fact it’s more bouncy and noisier than my Jimny, but it puts a huge smile on my face.

Suzuki Jimny 6X4: final verdict

The Suzuki Jimny 6X4 isn’t for me – I prefer my standard Jimny. That said, I do like it, and I can see how it would appeal to somebody who wanted a show car to turn heads. If you are that somebody, it’s for sale right now for £45,000.
