The shocking number plates just banned by DVLA in latest crackdown

More than 400 number plate combinations have been barred by the DVLA ahead of the new ‘75’ registration plates hitting UK roads on 1 September, according to a Freedom of Information request filed by private plate supplier Regtransfers.

This latest ban brings the total number of restricted combinations for the 2025 series to 646, with the blacklist including plates referencing Nazi atrocities, criminal behaviour, and sensitive political issues.

Among the most alarming examples are AU75 WTS and AU75 WTZ, which appear to resemble “Auschwitz” — the infamous Nazi death camp where over a million Jews were killed during WWII.

Other banned combinations include LE75 KLL (“Let’s kill”) and LE75 LSD (“Let’s LSD”) which can both be construed as promoting violence or drug use. Homophobic, racist and sexist combinations have also been banned to avoid causing offence. This includes AS75 GAY.

Political messages haven’t escaped scrutiny either. Plates such as EU75 OUT, EU75 WAR and EU75 YES have been pulled due to their links to heated debates over Brexit and EU membership.

There are also plates containing “wildcard” characters, which could be interpreted as offensive. For example, combinations such as 75 HAG block all plates ending in “75 HAG” — regardless of 400+ listed.

Mark Trimbee, CEO of Regtransfers, said: “These bans ensure that number plates on the road aren’t those that could be translated into something offensive, inflammatory, insulting, obscene or otherwise problematic.

“As always, some inclusions — such as BA75 SHT or KN75 VES — jump off the page, and it’s quite obvious why the DVLA would want to avoid them being on the roads.

“There are almost always some, however, that might take a bit of deciphering, but the DVLA has to err on the side of caution with matters like this.”

The banned number plates aim to prevent you from inadvertently breaking the rules, but you can still face fines of up to £1,000 for not meeting certain standards.

To comply with UK regulations, you must make sure your plates are correctly coloured — white at the front and yellow at the rear. Using non-compliant colours can result in a fine.

Incorrect font, spacing, or character sizing is also a violation. All plates must feature the Charles Wright font, with strict guidelines for height, width, thickness, and spacing of characters.

Your car can also automatically fail its MOT test if the number plates are non-compliant, and your car insurance coverage could be invalidated too.
