About Nissan

Nissan dates from the 1930s, but the company can trace its origins back through Datsun. This company started way back in 1911, building its first car in 1914.

Fast forward to 1999, and Nissan was in serious financial trouble. The company was saved by forming an alliance with the French car maker, Renault. The arrangement continues today, with Renault and Nissan models often sharing engines and other technology.

Today, Nissan has become something of an SUV specialist. The Juke is its smallest model in the UK now that the Micra has been discontinued, with the X-Trail being the largest passenger car. Nissan has strong ties with Britain, building the Qashqai, Juke, and Ariya in its Sunderland plant.

What our car expert says

“Nissan has made some brilliant sports cars in the past, but today it focuses on SUVs and electric cars. The Qashqai is Nissan’s most popular model – just about every mainstream manufacturer now has a Qashqai clone in its line-up.”

Nissan FAQs

Since 1999, Nissan has been in partnership with Renault. Originally known as the Renault-Nissan Alliance, the addition of Mitsubishi to the group created the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance. Nissan is a subsidiary of the alliance.
Yes, Nissan builds good cars. The Juke is probably the weakest link in the range with a wowscore of 5/10, but the Ariya, Qashqai, and X-Trail make really good buys.
Yes, a Nissan is still a good car. Car enthusiasts will miss the old 370Z sports car, but the current line-up combines safety and technical innovation to deliver cars that are well worth a place on your shortlist.
That’s a tough one. The Leaf is a decent EV, and Ariya and X-Trail are among the best cars of their kind. But the best Nissan is the Qashqai, which established the template for the family crossover and continues to set a high bar for other similar models.
