Car changing is a big deal
This is the new Nissan Patrol, a big dune-busting SUV which is only offered in the Middle East.
- New Nissan Patrol revealed
- Rugged off-roader gets a new look
- More powerful twin-turbocharged V6 engine
- Modernised interior design
- Won’t be sold in Europe
The Nissan Patrol has been around for decades, however it’s not all that well-known here in the UK. That’s because it was pulled from our showrooms in the mid-noughties, but it lives on in the Middle East.
It’s one of Dubai’s best-selling models, and a new Patrol has just been revealed with updated styling, a new interior and a more powerful V6 engine.
New Nissan Patrol design
The Nissan Patrol’s closest rival is the full-size Toyota Land Cruiser, another big off-roader we don’t get in Europe (we get the smaller ‘Prado’ version), and as such it has a similarly rugged and upright design.
The bonnet is very tall and square, with C-shaped LED lights framing the huge and imposing grille. This new Patrol looks a lot more modern than the car it replaces as well thanks to a light strip across the bonnet and a redesigned lower bumper.
From the side this new car is just as boxy as the one it replaces, and a set of 22-inch alloy wheels wrapped in chunky rubber adds to the rugged vibe. You also get side steps to make it easier to climb aboard, as well as gloss black roof rails.
Changes to the rear aren’t too radical either. The taillights have been turned on their ends so they’re now vertical, and a full-width light bar makes it look much more contemporary.
New Nissan Patrol engine and chassis
The new Nissan Patrol has been fitted with a 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine, two cylinders less than the outgoing V8 model. Despite a decrease in displacement, this new car is actually more powerful than its predecessor.
Check out this bonkers tuned Nissan Patrol…
It puts out 425hp, a 30hp increase over the old car, and 700Nm of torque. It’s also 10hp and 50Nm of torque up on the V6-powered Toyota Land Cruiser.
To make sure the new Patrol is just as comfortable cruising down a high street as it is blasting across a desert, it’s fitted with an air suspension setup. You can raise the car up to clear larger obstacles, and it’ll lower at high speeds to improve aerodynamics.
There is also a wide range of driving modes to choose from, including sand, rock and mud/rut modes to get you out of a sticky situation.
New Nissan Patrol interior and infotainment
It may be a very capable off-roader, but the new Nissan Patrol doesn’t look like a utilitarian army jeep when you climb aboard. It actually looks very civilised.
You get two massive 14.3-inch screens across the dashboard, and you can get a further two 12.8-inch screens in the back to keep the kid entertained – you can even connect games consoles using a HDMI cable.
There are no fewer than 64 different colours for the ambient lighting to flick between to get the ambience just right, as well as a 12-speaker premium audio system.
New Nissan Patrol: why can’t I buy one?
The Nissan Patrol disappeared from UK showrooms in the mid-noughties due to dwindling sales figures, however these days ever-tightening emissions regulations make it difficult to introduce this car back into Europe.
If you live in Dubai then you can order your new Nissan Patrol now for 239,900 dirham, which equates to around £50,000.
