- Budget-friendly EV to cost less than £17,000
- Funky retro-inspired design
- Could share parts with the Dacia Spring
- May have around 185 miles of range
Renault is on a roll reviving retro models at the moment, with the new 5 gracing our screens earlier in the year and the new 4 coming imminently. The new Twingo is also going on sale in 2026, and we’ve now seen it in the metal for the first time.
When can I buy the new Renault Twingo?
You’ll be waiting until early 2026 before you can think about adding a new Renault Twingo to your driveway, so you may want to have a look at the Dacia Spring if you’re after a budget-friendly electric car for zipping around the city before then.
If you can hang on until then though, the new Twingo will cost less than £17,000 when it goes on sale. That makes it just a tad more expensive than a range-topping Spring and a whopping £8,000 cheaper than the Fiat 500 Electric.
New Renault Twingo design
The new Twingo is one in a line of modernised classic models from Renault in the past few months – joining the new 5 and the forthcoming 4 electric cars. As you’d expect, this looks a lot like the characterful Twingo hatchback of the 1990s.
Anyone who remembers the original car will recognise the friendly-looking round lights up front and the bubble-like shape. The new Twingo also has the three vents on the bonnet from the classic hatch, although these are adapted to show your battery percentage.
Down the side you’ll notice that this is a practical five-door – unlike the first two Twingo models which were both three-door only. Renault has done a good job of hiding the rear doors though to give it the illusion of sportiness.
Moving to the rear you’ll notice the LED taillights which mimic the lamps up front. The way the bodywork kinks outwards beneath the back window is also very reminiscent of the second-generation Twingo from the mid 2000s.
New Renault Twingo batteries and range
The new Renault Twingo is being developed by Renault’s Ampere sub-brand – a division which focuses solely on electric cars. There’s no word yet on exactly what batteries or motors will be powering this car, but it’ll be built on the same collection of parts as the Renault 5.
Being a budget-friendly city car, the Twingo doesn’t need to have a massive battery, and Renault has told Carwow that this car’s battery will be smaller than the 40kWh pack you get in the 5 – stopping short of telling us exactly how big it is.
It has been revealed that the Twingo will be able to achieve an impressive efficiency rating of 6.2 miles per kWh, so assuming a battery capacity of around 30kWh the Twingo could have around 185 miles of range.
