This is the spiritual successor to bonkers hot hatches like the Renault Clio V6 and the original 5 Turbo 3E of the 1980s. Here are five cool things you need to know about.

The new Renault 5 Turbo 3E is a car no one was really expecting. It’s a 500hp carbon fibre hot hatch, and it’s the first time Renault has made something crazy like this since it slapped a V6 engine in the middle of the Clio back in the late 1990s.

You’ll actually be able to buy one as well, although only 1,980 will ever be made so you’ll need to be quick. It’s also expected to cost well over £100,000. Here are five cool things about the new Renault 5 Turbo 3E.

1. 540hp and a massive 4,800Nm of torque

This dinky electric car is packing enough power to scare supercars. With 540hp on tap, the Renault 5 Turbo 3E is expected to do 0-60mph in just 3.5 seconds – just 0.2 of a second slower than a Porsche 911 Carrera S.

If the power figure wasn’t crazy enough for you, the Turbo 3E has a whopping 4,800Nm of torque. That’s three times more than you get in a Bugatti Chiron Supersport.

2. Clever new motor tech

All of this power comes courtesy of a pair of motors which are integrated into the rear wheels. This has a few advantages over traditional inboard motors, with weight reduction being the main one.

They are much smaller and lighter than normal motors, and they have a more immediate power delivery. The car can also control the two motors separately to make it more agile through the corners.

3. Built for drifting

The Renault 5 Turbo 3E has been designed for having fun, and there are a couple of features which make it easy to slide about on the track. All that power goes through just the rear wheels for starters.

It has a “Drift Assist” function which helps you to get the back end out, and you even get a rally-style vertical handbrake lever for tackling tight hairpins.

4. Lightweight

Electric cars can be very heavy thanks to the batteries, but the Renault 5 Turbo 3E weighs just 1,450kg. That makes it almost 30kg lighter than the Alpine A390, which should help make this a fun electric car to drive.

There is a lot of carbon fibre in this car to keep the weight down, including the chassis and parts of the interior. The Turbo 3E is also a strict two-seater so there are no rear seats to add heft.

5. Super-fast charging

The fun doesn’t have to stop for long when you charge up, because the Renault 5 Turbo 3E has an 800-volt electrical system which can top up at 350kW, allowing you to go from 10-80% in just 15 minutes.

Renault expects this car to have 249 miles of range, which is actually slightly more than the Alpine A290, another hot hatch which is also based on the Renault 5.
