Is a used SEAT Ateca a good car?

The SEAT Ateca is a mid-sized SUV that’s stylish, practical and surprisingly fun to drive – though this does come at the cost of a bit of comfort.

It has always looked good, but in 2020 it received an update that made it look a bit sharper. You can spot the new model because of the Ateca logo in a handwritten script on the boot.

Unfortunately, even with this update, the interior looks pretty bland. You get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard, so there’s no need to get a high-spec version with built-in sat nav – though these models feel a bit posher inside.

The boot is a good size, with more space than you get in the Nissan Qashqai, and enough room for two large and two small suitcases beneath the parcel shelf.

What to look for when buying a second hand SEAT Ateca

The good news for families in particular is that the SEAT Ateca scored the full five stars out of five in Euro NCAP safety testing. Its adult occupant score of 93% is really impressive, while its 84% child occupant rating is also decent. It’s worth noting that this rating was on an older, less stringent test, though.

The SEAT Ateca has an okay record for reliability. There are signs that earlier cars could be a bit more reliable than later ones, interestingly, as it has scored less well in owner satisfaction surveys in recent years than it has in the past.

One of the things owners do appreciate, though, is its great value for money, and the fact that it doesn’t cost a huge amount to fix when things do go wrong.

The most common complaint appears to be because of the electrical systems, particularly relating to glitches in the screens. Electrics can be a nightmare to sort, so make sure you spend some time in the infotainment displays and menus, and consider walking away if there are any issues.

SEAT Ateca FAQs

Yes, the SEAT Ateca is available with four-wheel drive, but it’s front-wheel drive as standard. Unless you plan to regularly head off road, four-wheel drive won’t be much help, and has the other disadvantage of being less economical than front-driven versions.

The SEAT Ateca is fairly reliable – it’s not bulletproof but you’d have to be unfortunate to get a lemon. It also shares parts with many other Volkswagen Group models, so repairs and maintenance won’t be extortionate.

The SEAT Ateca is made in Kvasiny, Czech Republic.

The SEAT Ateca is bigger than the Arona. As a result it has more space in the boot as well as the cabin, so passengers will be more comfortable.
