Best superminis of 2024

Superminis are a great choice for those who want something small and manoeuvrable for town driving, but also want to be able to carry passengers and luggage on longer trips at the weekends. They’re great value for money, cheap to run and easy to live with. There are loads of great superminis out there to choose from, here are 10 of the best on the market.

What's good

  • Slick cabin feels posh
  • Very comfortable on the road
  • Plenty of boot space

What’s not so good

Few cars offer value for money like the Dacia Sandero. It offers an impressively practical cabin, a comfortable ride and is surprisingly well equipped if you avoid the entry-level car. The cabin may not be the most stylish, however at this price you can forgive this small fly in the ointment.

What's good

  • Value for money is tough to beat
  • Interior is spacious and impressively practical
  • Holds its value well

What’s not so good

  • Poor two-star safety rating
  • No USB charge points in rear

  • Efficient hybrid engine

What’s not so good

  • Rear legroom
  • Bumpy with large wheels
  • Alternatives are much cheaper
Want your supermini to have a bit of je ne sais quoi? Then check out the Peugeot 208. Its bold styling makes it stand out in the supermarket car park, and the cabin is just as stylish. Some alternatives may offer more rear passenger space, but the Peugeot is well equipped, good to drive and is available as an eco-friendly electric model as well.

What's good

  • Striking looks
  • Fantastic interior

  • Stylish design
  • Fun to drive
  • Decent-sized boot

What’s not so good

  • Some cheap plastics inside
  • Top models can get pricey
  • Entry-level petrol engine is noisy
You can think of the SEAT Ibiza as the Volkswagen Polo’s flamboyant cousin. They’re the same car underneath, however the Ibiza is just more stylish and more fun to drive. It may not be as well made as the Polo, however it still offers decent practicality and a big boot.

What's good

  • Stylish design
  • Fun to drive
  • Decent-sized boot

  • Great fun to drive
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard
  • Nippy 100hp petrol engine

What’s not so good

  • ST-Line models feel firm
  • Alternatives have more rear space...
  • ...and bigger boots
If having fun on a twisty road is important to you, then the Ford Fiesta might be right up your alley. The agile handling and nippy engines make this supermini a right giggle to drive, however the trade-off for this is a slightly firmer ride than some alternatives. Still, at least standard equipment is generous across the range.

What's good

  • Great fun to drive
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard
  • Nippy 100hp petrol engine

What’s not so good

  • ST-Line models feel firm
  • Alternatives have more rear space...

What’s not so good

  • Dour interior
  • Ride is firm on larger wheels
  • Rear-seat and boot space aren't great
You won’t be stopping at the petrol pumps very often with the Toyota Yaris thanks to its efficient hybrid engine, and it’s a lot more than just economical. It’s also fun to drive, comfortable and offers loads of standard equipment. It’s just a shame that rear legroom and boot space aren’t the best.

What's good

  • Efficient hybrid engine
  • Good fun to drive
  • Plenty of standard equipment

What’s not so good

  • Tight rear seats
  • High boot lip
  • Not as comfy as alternatives
Not many superminis at this price point offer interior quality quite like the Renault Clio. Everything is well made and solid, and material quality is excellent. You also get loads of standard equipment and a huge boot. It could just do with being a bit more fun to drive, but at least it’s a good looking car.

What's good

  • High quality interior
  • Massive boot
  • Stylish design

What’s not so good

  • Tight rear seats
  • High boot lip

The Vauxhall Corsa has been an icon of the British car market since the 90s, and still manages to be a respectable choice in the city car segment. It’s fun to drive, frugal with fuel and you get plenty of kit as standard. Shame that it’s not as practical as other options or as exciting in the cabin, though.

Advice about superminis

Superminis FAQs

A supermini is essentially a compromise between a family-sized hatchback and a city car. They’re bigger than city cars, offering enough rear space to carry adults and a bigger boot, but aren’t quite as large as a family hatch.

Superminis are ideal for those looking for something that’s easy to drive in town, but still want the practicality of usable rear seats and a big boot. They’re also perfect for anyone looking to downsize from their bigger hatchback or MPV.
