The Suzuki Swift Sport, and a handful of other Suzuki models, have been discontinued to make way for a new range of EVs from the brand.

Hot hatchbacks are dropping like flies at the moment. We’ve already lost the Ford Fiesta ST, and the Hyundai i20 N is soon to face the chop as well. Well now we’ve lost another one; the Suzuki Swift Sport will be discontinued after this year.

It comes as part of a streamlining exercise to make way for a new range of EVs by 2030, with the Jimny, Ignis and Swace also being dropped from the lineup.

Suzuki Swift Sport front

If you rewind 10 years or so there were loads of dinky hot hatchbacks to choose from. You had the Fiesta ST, the Peugeot 208 GTI, the Renaultsport Clio RS and the Vauxhall Corsa VXR to name a few.

Admittedly, the Suzuki Swift Sport never really held a candle to these cars in terms of outright performance, but it’s still great fun to drive thanks to sweet handling and a peppy engine. In 2024 the affordable small hot hatch is dying out, and the demise of the Swift Sport leaves just the slightly lardy Volkswagen Polo GTI standing.

So why is Suzuki doing this? Well in short – it has to. Ever-tightening emissions laws are putting pressure on manufacturers to sell a higher ratio of EVs, and Suzuki doesn’t currently offer any electric cars. This will change next year though with the introduction of the new eVX. More new all-electric models will be launched by 2030.

The quirky Ignis is also on the chopping block

The Swift Sport isn’t the only car disappearing from forecourts. The Jimny light commercial vehicle, Ignis and Swace are also bidding farewell. Suzuki will only be selling these cars from existing stock, so once they’re gone, they’re gone.
