Tesla has just unveiled an updated Model Y with improved range courtesy of an updated battery, and it’ll cost £349 per month.

  • New Tesla Model Y long range revealed
  • Replaces the existing rear-wheel drive model
  • Multiple tweaks to improve efficiency
  • Almost 100 miles more range than before
  • On sale now from £46,990

This is the new Tesla Model Y Long Range, and it replaces the current Rear-Wheel Drive model as the entry-level model in the lineup.

There are no design changes to speak of, and the interior is exactly the same as well. The main change has happened under the skin with a revised battery which improves range.

New Tesla Model Y Long-Range – what’s new?

The new Tesla Model Y Long-Range hasn’t changed at all in terms of design (this isn’t the facelifted Model Y Juniper, that’s coming next year), the main change is improved range thanks to a range of small tweaks.

The battery has been fettled ever so slightly to make it more efficient, and you get a heat pump as standard which warms the cabin without draining too much range. It’s also fitted with special low-resistance tyres to reduce the amount of energy it takes to keep the car rolling.

The upshot of this is 373 miles of range, which is almost 100 miles more than the outgoing car. It’s also around 20 more miles than an Audi Q4 e-tron can manage, and it’s 30 miles up on the Volkswagen ID5. An entry-level Polestar 2 will do 244 miles on a charge, however the long-range version of that car has 406 miles of range.

New Tesla Model Y Long-Range price and specs

The new Tesla Model Y Long Range starts from £46,990, which is £2,000 more than the outgoing Rear-Wheel Drive model. You can also lease one for £349 per month through Tesla. This is with a £4,383 up-front payment over two years, with a 5,000 mile per year limit.

Standard equipment is the same as before, meaning there’s a lot of it. You get Tesla’s excellent 15.4-inch central touchscreen, a 13-speaker sound system and adaptive cruise control as standard.

All you really have to choose is the colour and which wheels you want – there are 19- or 20-inch options, and whether you want to pay extra for the advanced Autopilot system which allows you to summon the car from your phone, as well as change lanes and take motorway exits automatically.
