Is a second hand Tesla Model Y a good car?

Yes, the Tesla Model Y is a very good car. Essentially, it’s the SUV version of the excellent Tesla Model 3, which is one of the best electric cars you can buy.

The Model Y is a little bigger than the 3, which makes it a much more practical used car. There’s more luggage space and the rear seats are more adult-friendly.

It’s not all good news. To stop the Model Y from leaning too much in corners Tesla has made the Y’s suspension stiffer than the Model 3’s. The ride is uncomfortable and there’s more road noise than you’d expect of an electric car.

There’s nothing disappointing about the Tesla’s performance, though. This is one rapid EV, even if you choose the entry-level model. The Performance version is an absolute rocket ship.

Nobody is better than Tesla at building electric cars that are both quick and efficient. Even with the smaller of the two available battery sizes (60kWh and 78kWh) the Y will go 283 miles in official tests. With the larger battery, the range is up to 331 miles. In real-world conditions you may not go quite so far, but the Model Y will be closer to its official range than most EVs.

You can plot a route to your next charging point through the huge 15-inch touchscreen. The infotainment system doesn’t just take care of the usual navigation and stereo functions, just about everything other than steering, stopping and going is controlled through the screen. It takes a bit of getting used to, and it’s frustrating that Apple CarPlay and Android Auto aren’t available.

What to look for when buying a used Tesla Model Y

If you enjoy driving, the Model Y Performance is very tempting. Just be sure the extra power is worth it. The regular Model Y is a cheaper used buy and with 347hp it’s very quick in its own right.

Depending on the type of journeys you make, the shorter range may not be a problem, either, especially as you’ll have access to the excellent Tesla Supercharger network.

Don’t worry too much about the battery life – there are plenty of Teslas that have covered huge mileages on their original batteries. Tesla covers the battery with an eight-year, 120,000-mile warranty. If the capacity drops below 70% in that time it will be replaced.

Other parts are covered by a four-year, 50,000-mile warranty.

Early Tesla models suffered from a variety of irritating faults, but the Model 3 and Model Y are both much less temperamental. There shouldn’t be too much to worry about.

These cars are packed with high-tech features, so make sure they are all working as they should.

Tesla Model Y FAQs

If the battery has been drained down to empty, then it will take 60kWh to charge a Model Y with the smaller of the available batteries. A full recharge for the larger battery needs 78kWh.

There are seven-seat versions of the Model Y which US customers can buy. But in the UK, the Model Y is a five-seater.

You can plug it into a home charger or use a public charging point. The Model Y is compatible with both AC (alternating current) and DC (direct current charging). One of the advantages of Tesla ownership is full access to the Supercharger network, which is powerful and reliable.

It varies depending on the version you go for. A used Tesla Model Y will either have a 60kWh or a 78kWh battery.

The Tesla Model Y is 4,751mm long, 1,921mm wide, and 1,624mm tall. That makes it just a little bigger than alternatives such as the Kia EV6.

It’s a very safe car, packed with safety kit and high-tech driver aids. The safety experts at Euro NCAP tested the car in 2022 and awarded the maximum five stars, including an exceptional 97% score for adult occupant protection.

Yes, a used Tesla Model Y is a roomy car. The extra size compared with the Model 3 has been put to good use, giving more passenger space in the back and extra room for luggage.

Yes. Tesla has really upped its game in this respect. There are fewer niggles with the Model Y than with older Tesla models. What’s more, electric cars are generally more reliable than petrols and diesels.

You can. The Tesla Model Y can tow up to 1,600kg, which is a healthy maximum towing figure for an electric car.
