Is a second hand Toyota Yaris Cross a good car?

Yes, the Toyota Yaris Cross is a good used car. If you need a small hatchback but like the style of an SUV, the Yaris Cross combines elements of both.

Size-wise, it’s very small. The Yaris Cross is at home around town, nipping into gaps in traffic and squeezing into the smallest of parking spaces. The raised ride height helps with visibility, and since the only gearbox is a CVT auto your left leg won’t become tired in heavy traffic. Being a hybrid, the Toyota is very fuel-efficient, and stop-start urban driving helps keep the battery in a healthy state of charge.

Move out of town and the engine can be noisy when asked for a quick burst of acceleration. On rough roads the ride is quite firm, too, so you’re bounced around a bit.

On the motorway, the higher powered 130hp model is a better bet than the 116hp version, although neither is very quiet at 70mph.

It’s a shame the distinctive styling isn’t carried through to the cabin. The Yaris Cross is a bit bland inside. There’s plenty of room in the front though, and rear-seat space is respectable for such a small car.

As a used buy, the best thing about the Yaris Cross is Toyota’s reliability. Very little ever goes wrong with the Yaris Cross and if you do have a problem Toyota’s dealer network usually puts things right quick smart.

Toyota’s warranty lasts for three years at least, but can be extended up to 10 years and 100,000 miles provided the car is always serviced within the franchised network.

What to look for when buying a used Toyota Yaris Cross

Don’t look for a manual gearbox. The Yaris Cross is a hybrid and has never been sold as a manual. If that puts you off you’ll have to shop for something else.

There’s not a lot to report in terms of common problems. Toyotas will rack up intergalactic mileages without any trouble, so you’ll be unlucky to have any serious issues while owning a Yaris Cross.

It is worth checking that the car has been serviced on time, and ideally with a Toyota dealer to take advantage of the new-car warranty which renews every 12 months so long as the owner stays loyal to the franchised network. Other things to look out for include the usual scuffed alloys and parking biffs that are common for cars mostly used around town.

Toyota Yaris Cross FAQs

No. Despite the off-roader-lite styling, the Yaris Cross is a front-wheel-drive car. There’s no 4x4 version.

It’s not a plug-in, but it is a hybrid. The Yaris Cross has a small battery and will run on electricity alone for short distances, recharging the battery using energy that would otherwise be lost while slowing down.

Yes, a very small SUV but an SUV nonetheless. You might also call it a ‘crossover’ as it bridges the gap between a small hatchback and an SUV.

The Toyota Yaris Cross is made in France and Japan.
