Is the Vauxhall Grandland a good car?

Previously, if you wanted a Vauxhall Grandland Hybrid, you had to get one with a slightly clunky plug-in hybrid setup which didn’t have much in the way of electric-only range, and wasn’t very economical when you were using the petrol engine.

This time around, the Grandland Hybrid has become much more simple. Out goes the plug-in bit, and in comes a heavily-revised 1.2-litre turbo petrol three-cylinder engine, which is backed-up by an electric motor sitting between it and the six-speed automatic gearbox.

It’s not quite the same as a Toyota hybrid, in that it doesn’t have a big battery and can only run on electric-only power for really tiny bursts, but it’s a bit more hybrid-y than some rival mild hybrid systems, which are really just stop-start with attitude.

Emissions are relatively trim at 124g/km of CO2, and Vauxhall quotes all-round fuel economy at 51.3mpg. That might be a bit of a tough figure to match, unless you’re mostly driving around town where the hybrid system can flex its electric muscles a bit more. On the open road, you’re more likely to see fuel economy of around 40mpg.

The Grandland has a stylish new look that makes it much more appealing than the old one...

The Grandland Hybrid is a deal more stylish this time around. The overall shape and style is actually pretty similar to that of the old one — from the blunt ‘Vizor’ front end to that forward-leaning rear roof pillar — but this is a far sharper-looking car than the old Grandland, with some genuinely desirable style to it. Check out that full-width rear brake light bar, and the see-through bits of the ‘Vizor’ grille at the front. A stylish Vauxhall? Yup, it’s true.

The cabin is even more stylish again. Out goes the grim black plastic palace of the old Grandland and in comes soft-touch materials, and much-improved digital screens. There’s a pair of 10.0-inch screens as standard — one for the instruments and one for the infotainment system — and optionally that infotainment screen can be upgraded to 16-inches across. A whopper!

Space in the cabin is also much-improved, thanks to the fact that this Grandland Hybrid is taller, longer, and wider than before. There’s a massive 550-litre boot out the back too, so this is going to be a really practical family car.

Pricing could be an issue for the Grandland. Obviously, almost all cars have become much more expensive in the past few years, but the new Grandland Hybrid is around £2,500 pricier than the old basic Grandland, which might be enough to put you off.

In fact, you might be tempted to just walk across the showroom floor, because in a few months the new, much cheaper, Frontera will be sitting there at a considerably cheaper price. Okay, so the new Grandland is much more sophisticated and upmarket than the Frontera, but it remains to be seen whether it will be worth the extra cash.

Standard equipment including radar-guided cruise control, lane-keeping steering, a 10.0-inch infotainment screen, two-zone climate control, and 19-inch alloy wheels and the Grandland Hybrid will be available in Design, GS, and Ultimate trim levels.

Vauxhall Grandland Hybrid FAQs

It ought to be. This new one is riding on an all-new platform which means it’s as yet unproven, but the STLA chassis has been developed to be used by a whole multitude of car brands in the Stellantis Group, from Peugeot to Citroen, Vauxhall, Fiat, Alfa Romeo, and Jeep. So it had better be good, or it won’t just be Vauxhall having problems.

The Grandland is Vauxhall’s mid-sized SUV, so it’s equivalent to a Nissan Qashqai, a Ford Kuga, or a Toyota RAV4. In terms of size and space, it sits roughly between the new Peugeot 3008 and Peugeot 5008, which both share their structure, engines, and electric motors with the Vauxhall.

The new Grandland range is topped by the Ultimate model, which comes as standard with automatic lane change assistance, a 360-degree camera system, a high-end sound system from Focal, a head-up display, a heated windscreen, intelligent air conditioning and climate control, a powered tailgate, and 20-inch alloy wheels.
